Islam: "Once we humble ourselves, rid ourselves of our egoism and submit totally to Allah, and to Him exclusively, in faith and in action, we will surely feel peace in our hearts. Establishing peace in our hearts will bring about peace in our external conduct as well." (Introduction to Islam, by Bilal Philips)
Buddhism: "The SGI's ultimate purpose is to contribute to the establishment of a peaceful world where all people experience happiness. We can make our lives larger and experience a stronger life-condition by endeavoring to help others. This way of life founded on compassion is instrumental in helping us strengthen our own Buddha nature. It is the altruistic interactions with people in our daily lives that will help us grow and become enlightened." (Soka Gakkai International)
Judaism: "My covenant was with him, a covenant of life and peace, and I gave them to him; this reverence and he revered me and stood in awe of my name." (Mal 2:5)
Christianity: "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me." (Mt 16:24, Mk 8:34, Lk 9:23)
Hinduism: "Ultimate Reality has an impersonal nature. It can be known only by merging with it and thus by abolishing personhood." (Comparative Religions by Ernest Valea)
What is the point? All major religions of the world have the same major premise: altruistic behavior as the beginning to a more exalted state (heaven, enlightenment, nirvana, ultimate reality, whatever). Just thought I'd point this out.
