HAPPY NEW YEAR! Hope you like the new look photo page to which I will make additions over the next few weeks.
Feliciano wise I have had a slow start to the new year and have not even heard the new album yet! However, I do have this from Philip in Los Angeles
"Yesterday was a busy day for Jose. During the day, we could see him Live on
TV, singing the National Anthem, at the inauguration of Governor Schwarzenegger.
He sang beautifully, one of the best renditions I've ever heard. In the evening,
some 1300 people saw him perform at the Shumash Casino in the beautiful Santa
Inez Valley, a two hour drive from Los Angeles.
He and the band sounded great. He did most of his usual live material; Bamboleo,
Chico and the man, Dance with me, Knocking on heavens door, Puple Haze.
Jose sang one song from his upcoming release, the end of January. The album is
called Soundtrack of my Life and he sang a song called I Faced The Music, a song
that he wrote a few years ago when he felt that his career wasn't going well.
He said that the album has 17 songs on it, which he composed over the last five
years. He ended the show with Feliz Navidad, and the almost two hour show gave
him standing ovations."
14th January 2007: I have received further comment about last week's gig and am told "The gig was phenomenal! Sold out.. great performances and sound". José really does seem to have had a good start to the new year with one new album out and another next week; this does promise to be a good year.
21st January 2007: I have been trying to get into the Geocities site all day! Hope this is worth the wait! The obvious big news is that "The Soundtrax of My Life" is reeleased on Tuesday....I can't wait :)
I do now have "José Feliciano Y Amigos" but have not had the time to do a review of it. HOWEVER I suspect that lots of people have already visited the new web page listed on the CD booklet My Space . If you have not seen it go there :) there are some great new pictures of José and it connects to another JF page. The idea of My Space seems to be to develop friendship groups for what ever purpose! I have added a profile based on this site so click on the site logo on José's page and get in touch if you want to be my "friend" and develop a Feliciano Fiesta presence there to help spread the word.
Yesterday I recceived a message from José's My Space page asking for support in promoting the music of Gypsy Boy José Reyes.....check out his web site!
28th January 2007: I haven't got "Soundtrax" yet but Phil makes the following comment. "What a great album, tons of music...great new songs and true Feliciano!".
I have just added to the picture page so if you want to see what I look like go there!.
4th February 2007: I have just received "The Soundtrax of My Life" and will review it next week. I have already commented on it on José's Myspace page so use the link to go there.
In the meantime Phillip went to the gig in California on Friday and these are his comments on that show:-
"Cerritos Center for the Arts was sold out to the last seat. This is a good place
to see Jose. The sound is great, and its his crowd, since he lived here in Orange
County for many years.
The show lasted two hours, and was one of his best. He did an electric version of "Superstition", and brought down the
house with a (more than usual) exceptional guitar playing on "Malagueña" and
"Bamboleo".
From the new English album, his 74th album (!) he sang "She's
in my blood" and "I faced the Music". The band members showed off their
talent in the instrumental "Regaton Calienete". The last song of the evening was
"Feliz Navidad".
The audience really showed their appreciation and Jose said that this was the best Friday night he's had in a long time.
when one walks out after a concert you can hear people commenting...
"That was amazing", "He's actually much better now that when I saw him years ago" and "I've never seen anyone play like that"!
11th February 2007: A bad bout of flu and bad weather have put me behind schedule with rather a lot of things this week including the reviews of "Soundtrax" and "Amigos" I am supposed to be writing! In the meantime José appeared on the Univision TV channel and gave this interview . The gig he mentions for Valentines day seems to be a private event. Phil is checking it out anfd I will post more news if there is any.
18th February 2007: I am actually struggling to review the two new albums. I like both very much, especially "Soundtrax" but I find them complex in their diversity; I don't know enough about music to do them justice......anyone else want to try?
In the meantime there was a gig on Valentines Day but it was a private event for a radio station, so we have no news of it.
Anyone know anything about a song called "Born in Puerto Rico"? A duet José performed with Paul Simon you can hear it on Youtube....I like it!
25th February 2007: Go to the Picture page to see some new additions for which I must thank my friend Bjarne Jansen and apologise for the HUGE delay in posting them. I have many more photos from Bjarne and will post them over the next months.
11th March 2007: Thirty four years ago yesterday I saw José in a live performance for the first time. These two videos on Youtube offer a good then and
now of this time!
I was delighted that Latino Health Access (LHA) chose to post this on our notice board saying that José has "donated a concert for June 8th at the UCI Events Center. The money would be going to Latino Health Access. LHA assists in improving the quality of life and health of uninsured, under-served people through quality preventive services and educational programs, emphasizing full participation in decisions affecting health". If you want to find out more about the organisation check out their website here . As the gig is in Irvine, California I suspect Phil will go and we will hear about it :)
24th March 2007: At last! I have spent about two hours today trying to get "into" this page to do an update in the hope that a different day might make me more successful! Anyway, José is to sing the National Anthem at a tennis tournament on 1st April read about it here
Apparantly José will duet (again) with Gloria Estefan on her forthcoming album due in September.
José's newest business venture is a range of designer sunglasses bearing the names of some of his songs.
1st April 2007: Click here for photos of José at the Princes Trust gig.
7th April 2007: In May José is to perform at the Puerto Rico Convention Centre in San Juan.
His personal website lists a gig in Monaco this July. Lets hope this is the beginning of a European Tour! I haven't seen José since 2004. I was prevented from going to the last London gig by the events of July 7th 2005 so this Easter lets hope the World begins to realise that Killing's not the answer.
15th April 2007: There is a nice photo of José at the Sony Erricson Open Tennis Tournament last week here . Filippo has just posted on the notice board to say that Amazon are taking pre release orders on a CD of "Alive Alive O" to be released in June.
PS! Bejarne sent me a tape of Feliciano rarities including "So Long Paul" and an odd song called "Here Comes Werberley" (?) which seems to be in a language which José would not normally use (ie not Spanish) it sounds like arabic to me! Anyone know anything about this piece?
Also I agree with Alan that this video of The Gypsy is worthy of comment.
22nd April 2007: It appears that the CD of "Alive Alive O" is already on sale from CD Universe.
Long ago this site used to feature a regular trivia quiz. I stopped doing that when I ran out of questions but can't resist this one! What was José's inspiration for "Affirmation"? The answer is on Youtube. If you want to post answers on the notice board we can declare a winner but I can't afford prizes!
In a career as long as José's new fans are always valuable so take a look at the pictuere page for the latest recruit......Bjarne's four year old son, Anders.
I will be away for the next couple of weeks so look out for the next update around 13th May.
13th May 2007: There was once a Peanuts poster with the caption "With my luck when my boat comes in I will be at the airport". I feel a bit like that in that the biggest news in relation to José broke while I was on holiday :) In relation to the London gig I can say only that Ronnie Scott's is a famous venue and will be very different from Jazz Cafe. It is seated and in case anyone else needs this information they say they are fully wheel chair accessible.
I am very much looking forward to going (probably on the Tuesday). My only reservation being that the price may mean people will go once only. The joy of Jazz Cafe was always meeting other people and hope we do so this year.
Before my holiday I set a trivia question; the inspiration for "Affirmation" can be found here.
20th May 2007: I just found this which indicates that José is doing a charity concert in New York on 18th August.
I have been asked for information about buying tickets for José's appearances at Ronnie Scott's click here to buy on line. I have also been asked for more general tourist information about London. This is the official tourist site. The site for Ronnie Scott's has a small map on it. Hope that helps.
If anyone wants to post information about any of the other European gigs contact me.
My coverage of the 2005 tour ended on July 7th there was "too much pain and too much sorrow". Pray for peace and join with me in hoping it will be José's best tour EVER! I hope we can have reviews on every gig SO if you go to one write to me :)
27th May 2007: Forty years after his first visit to London (the "No Dogs Allowed" trip) he is set to return in eight weeks and Ronne Scott's have this to say about him.
2nd June 2007: I have little news this week but there are some nice new photos on the news page of José's official site so go there!
24th June 2007: I have had huge technical problems over the last two weeks hence no updates - technical problems don't come much bigger than having no electricity!
Anyway apologies to Phil who sent this a while ago. " I went to Jose's show at UCI Irvine in California on Friday night. He and the band were in great shape. Jose seemed very rested, sounded better than ever and played amazingly. He did "she's in my blood", "superstition", "knocking on heavens door", the new version of "che sera", and mostly latin material since the crowd was mostly latin. The show lasted 90 minutes and he got his standing ovation."
Tina sent me this link to an article about one of the gigs José and the band did in Central America which I hear were a great success. I hate not posting things when I get them so apologies again to Phil and Tina.
I found this on the gig José and the band are doing in Mallorca on 2nd August; it is actually in Valledomossa (where Chopin lived with George Sands) not in Palma..hope this helps people to get there! I also found this article about a new album by Gloria Estefan which features José.
last but not least! I am deeply impressed by the publicity Ronnie Scott's are putting out in relation to José's English gigs.
2nd July 2007: On a day when I, again, face the probability of not getting to a Feliciano gig because I am not safe in my own country I applaud José's participation in a programme to bring Peace, Unity and Hope to the world.
2nd July - 12th August:Reviews of José's European concerts appear here
12th August 2007: As the European Tour ends I have drawn together all the comments we received about the various gigs into a separate page. Click on the link above to see it. I will move it to "Seen and Heard" next week. I do feel that between our efforts and those of his personal site there has been a brilliant Feliciano presence on the internet in the past few weeks.
Has anyone else realised that having completed an exhausting tour José travelled some 3000 miles out of his way to appear in a show to raise funds for the promotion of mariarchi music; that says something about this guy!
19th August 2007: Not much news this week but I did find this video from the Belgium gig.
26th August 2007: Tina found this, which suggests there is another spanish album on the way. I have no more news on this at present.
2nd September 2007: Click Here for a nice review of the Chicago gig; does it strike anyone else that José and the band have had no real break since mid July?
Apparantly "No Llores" the first single from the Gloria Estefan album "90 Millas" is number one in the Billboard Latin charts read about it here
9th September 2007: HAPPY BIRTHDAY JOSE for yesterday and tomorrow :). I have flu and my computer is not cooperating so will do more later!
17th September 2007; This video is especially for Bejarne as it was shot in Copenhagen but it will bring back memories for anyone who saw José in Europe in 1973.
Talking of Europe I liked this interview he gave in Majorca this summer.
Talking of nostalgia :) On the Noticeboard Alan talked enthusiastically about this dvd I offer the link but make your own decision about the vendor neither Alan nor I have used them.
1st October 2007: After another frustrating weekend courtesy of Geocities we are back in business! For news of the new album to be called "Senor Bachata" click on these links. Wikipeadia describe bachata here. Thanks to Philip for these links
Thanks to Tina who found these photos of last week's Concert for Peace, Unity and Hope
7th October 2007: click here to read about a forthcoming charity gig.
14th Ocotber 2007: As already mentioned by José's personal website and by Fil on the notice board the Smooth Jazz Top 20 Count Down features "Baker's Thing" from "Soundtrax", so vote for José and let them know what you think of this track - 74% of voters love the track!
21st October 2007: Great news from Vene Music that "Senor Bachata" will be released on 20th November. Hear the first single "Mar Y Cielo" here and read about it here.
Although the new album was the BIG news for me this week it was nice to see José "looking good" on Letterman
28th November 2007: "Senor Bachata" is available for pre release orders on Amazon. Tina found this article about the album and Alan has told me that a new CD of "Fireworks/10-23" will be available on 5th November (appropriate date:)
4th November 2007: It would appear that last week's charity gig went well.
I found this promotional video of Senor Bachata. Phil found this video anyone know anything about it??????
11th November 2007: Venemusic have opened a My Space page for Senor Bachata with a better quality version of the first track. Apparantly the video Phil found last week is a Christmas song which José has recorded with two girls from Tenerife whom he met in Majorca in the summer! Thanks Bejarne.
18th November 2007: ASCAP has announced its top 25 "Holiday Songs" and "Feliz Navidad" is at a higher position than last year at number 15!
click here for the first review of " Senor Bachata".
If anyone has tried to access this page on a mobile (cell) phone it is not very user friendly is it! I will try to remedy that in 2008.
25th November 2007: No real news of Senor Bachata yet but I do like this video of José playing cowboys . In those long ago days of the yak room I remember talking to Susan about it. It was filmed in the Almeria province of Spain around 1999/2000........WHAT was the TV show called? I know I should know :)
2nd December 2007: In a week in which José seems to have been in a christmas mood switching on christmas tree lights and singing "Feliz Navidad" Tina found this story about his involvement in an ecological protest in Puerto Rico. I am on holiday for the next couple of weeks so more, hopefully on Senor Bachata, just before Christmas.
4th January 2008: After returning from holiday I became significantley ill; Although recovering in some ways I am forced to rest in bed or chair (not wheel chair) will do updates when and if I can
