5x-3= 9 Make it your #1 duty to ISOLATE THE VARIABLE! Do This by Adding 3 to both sides of the equation
5x =12 Now you've gotten rid of that nasty 3.
x =12/5 To Find the value of X, divide 12 by 5.
x =2.4 You have now solved for X!
Example 2:  7x + 7 = 2(x + 1) OH NO!! A VARIABLE ON BOTH SIDES!!

7x = 2x + -6 Subtract 7 from each side since 7 was added on the original side.
5x = -6 Subtract 2x from each side since 2x was added on the original side.
-6/5 = x To solve for x, divide -6 by 5
x = -1.2 You have now solved for X!
