Linear Equations

Problem: 4x+7=27 Solve for x.
4x+7=27
     -7  -7
First you take the 7 and subtract from the left and right sides.  You are left with 4x=20.
4x=20 = x=20
4    4
Next you want to get the x by itself so you divide 4x by 4 and you do the same to the 20.
You are left with x=5. x=5 is your answer.
You have solved for x!

Literal Equations

Problem: d=rt Solve for t.
d=rt = d=t
r   r      r
You want to get t by itself so in this case you divide rt by r and you do the same thing with the d.  So your answer is d/r=t.

3 Different Equations For A Line

Point Slope Form

1. y-y1 = m(x-x1 This is the equation for our 1st equation for a line - POINT SLOPE.
Given: (0, 4)  slope=2 You are given the point (0, 4) and that the slope of the line is 2.
y-4=2(x-0) Now you take your given points and plug them into y1 and x and put your given slope in place of m.
y-4=2x For the last step you use distributive property and distribute the 2 to the x and 0.

Slope Intercept Form

2. y = mx+b This is the equation for SLOPE INTERCEPT.
Given: (0, 4)  slope=2 You are given the point (0,4) and that the slope of the line is 2.
y = 2x + 4 Now you plug in your given information.  You put your slope, which is 2, in place of the m and your y1 which is 4, will plug in for b.

Standard Form

3. ax+by = c This is the equation for STANDARD FORM.
Given: (0,4)  slope=2 You are given the point (0,4) and that the slope of the line is 2.
-2x-1y=4 Start with your slope intercept equation and then break it down and put it in this form.
2x+y=-4 Then take the equation and solve until your x is a positive integer.
