Solving Linear Equations
Example : 3(7+X) - 8X = 16
The 1st step to solve the linear equation is to distribute the 3 to the 7 and the X. |
Example : 21 + 3X - 8X = 16 | ||
The 2nd step is to combine the X's. | Example : 21 + -5X = 16
The third step is to subtract 21 from 16. | Example : -5x = -5
The final step is to get X by dividing by -5. | Example : X = 1 |
Solving Literal Equations
Example : P = W/T Solve for T
The first step is to get T to the other side by multiplying T to both sides. The T's on the right cancel out and you get your new equation. | Example : PT = W |
The second step is to get P to the other side by dividing both sides by P. The P's cancel out and you get your final equation solved for T. | Example : T = W/T |
Writing the Equation of a Line
Slope can be written by in three ways : Slope-Intercept Point-Slope Standard Form |
|
1st we will deal with Slope-Intercept ----------> The equation for slope-intercept is Y=MX + B |
Example : m=5, b= 4.5 |
All you need to do is put the example m into the M on the equation and the b from the example into the B on the equation. | Example : Y= 5X + 4.5 |
2nd we deal with Point-Slope----------------> The equation for point-slope is Y-Y1 = M(X) - X1 |
Example : Given point = (0,4) M = 2 |
Put the given point and the slope into the point-slope equation. | Example : Y - 4 = 2(X) - 0 |
The third and final equation is Standard Form.
The equation is X + Y = M + B. |
Example : Given point = (4,2) M = .25 |
Plug everything into the equation |
Example : 4 + 2 = .25 + b |
Solve for b. |
Example : 6 = .25 + b |
Example : 5.75 = b |
