Crazy for Math: Learn to love Algebra

In this website, I hope to enlighten you upon three of the most important equations in Algebra.  These are the Linear and Literal equations and the equation for a line.  After reading my problems and their solutions I hope that you will have a better understanding of them and how to use them.

Linear equation-An equation that can be written in the form AX = B.  A and B are always constants and A can'tequal 0

How to solve a Linear Equation
3/7X + 9 = 15 You need to start by copying the equation
3/7X = 6 You then need to subtract 9 from each side of the problem
X = 7/3(6) Next, you should multiply both sides by the reciprocal of 3/7, which is 7/3.  Doing so will get rid of the fraction
X = 14 Finally, after you multiply by the reciprocal you will get a simplified answer of 14.

As you see, it is very easy to solve a literal equation.  All you really need to do is isolate the X and then plug the X back into the equation to find an answer.

Literal Equations-A Literal Equation is an equation that applies to a real life formula to find or identify a formula for a certain thing.  While you can't really solve a literal equation, the point is to isolate one of the variables so you can find it's equation.

How to solve a Literal Equation
D = RT (Distance = Rate x Time)  Solve for R
D/T = RT/T You need to leave R by itself, so you need to divide both sides by T.
R = D/T By isolating R, you find that you need to divide the Distance by the Time to determine the Rate.

Equation for a Line- The equation of a line comes in the form of three different equations.  These are the standard form, the point slope form, and the slope intercept form.  You can use all 3 of these equations to find how a line is graphed.  All of them give you the slope and Y-intercept, which is all you need to graph your line on a chart.  I will explain these equations in the order of point slope, slope intercept, and then standard form.  In all of these equations, you can use the Y to find the Y intercept and the m to find the slope of the line.

Equation of a Line

Y-Y1 = m (X-X1) This is Point Slope form
* m will always equal the slope in this equation.

Y = mX + b This is Slope intercept form, it is the most common equation for a line that you will find. It gives you the basics you need to find the equation of a line which is the m=slope and b= Y-intercept

aX + bY = C This is the standard form for the equation of a line.
