Clint's webpage that better get him a good grade
Hi!! i'm clint. i ride bikes.  i hate computers.  computers hate me.  this page is a project assignment; it was supposed to be mathfully helpful, but i littered it with bike pictures to give it some pizazz so if you don't get the math, you can still see some nice bike style.

                            Word Problem!
The sum of a certain number(x) and a second number(y) is -42.  The first number minus the second is 52.  Find the numbers

Now, first of all, you HAVE to get two equations.  I used x for the first number and y for the second number.  The most obvious equations are X+Y=-42  &  X-Y=52.  Next, do whatever you have to do to COMBINE the two equations into one.The simplest thing to do is add.  The answer then is  2x=10. now it's easy stuff, divide by two and x=5.  Now, the last step; plug it in, plug it in.plug x in any equation(we'll pick the first)  5-y=52.  More easy stuff, subtract by 5 and you get -y=47.  Since negative y is bad, flip-flop signs and your done!
x=5          y=-47
                              Substitution!
x-y=-15  &  x=y=-5

Since you already have two equations,do ANYTHING to combine the two(with this problem adding is easiest)  You end up with 2x=-20.  Time for the easy stuff, divide by two and X=10.  Now, the last step;plug it in, plug it in.-10+y=-5, just add 10 to each side and Y=5.  That's it, your done=  X=10  &  Y=5

Linear Combo's!

7X+2Y=-1  &  3X-4Y=19

In this example, your already given two equations, but they need some work.  The easiest thing to do is multiply the top by 2, giving you:   14X+4Y=-2  &  3X-4Y=19.  Now, to combine them, just add.  17X=17.  Duh, divide by 17 and get X=1.  LAST  STEP- plug it in, plug it in.  14(1)+4Y=-2,  14+4Y=-2.  Now it's time for simple algebra, subtract 14, giving you 4Y=-16.  Divide by 4 and get Y=-4.
X=1  &  Y=-16
Now, since Carrie Anne made us all look bad by impressing Mrs.Felz with practice problems, I thought I'd throw in a few too.  After all it's not who you know, it's who you nose.
