Figures

What kind of figures you ask? I'll tell you... Not the rag-doll or cutesy type, or even folk-artsey sort... The look I am going for is slightly realistic, or about as realistic as my art usually gets. They are created from various elements; cloth, wire, super sculpy, organic tidbits, brain farts... Anything that looks nifty.

I now have two figures finished!

Tara Fox

I'm very excited with this piece, seeing as I've wanted to make a "toy" of this charecter for nearly 6-7 years...

She is 15 inches tall, made from Super Sculpey and a wire armature. Her arms, fingers, and wings are poseable. Her hair is embroidery thread, her clothing was made from 3 scraps of fabric. I added beads, bells and a small chain... The staff in her left hand is borrowed from the Orchard Shaman (I assume she is his pupil), and the glass jar that hangs from her right hand was made by a friend.

The Orchard Shaman

What I think is facinating is that I didnt intend to create him. I started playing with clay one day and two weeks later the Shaman was born... I think perhaps he wanted to exist, that there is a job for him to do.

My family has a hazelnut (filbert) orchard onthe McKenzie. This year, farmers in Springfield found their orchards infected with the Eastern Filbert Blight (EFB). There is no cure or treatment for EFB, and the infected orchards are a meere 1/2 hour from us. Once the trees contract the disease your choices are either to watch them die, or destroy them.

I feel the Orchard Shaman came into being as a protective spirit for our trees.

At home, at peace.
Flying.

The Shaman is clay over a wire armeture. He is fully poseable, including his fingers. The wire parts of his body are wrapped with embroidery floss, and some hemp. Arround his waist he wears a feathered breechcloth. Other adornments are materials I collected from our orchards. Moss, mushrooms, wood, and filbert husks all make up his attire.
