Bernt Kennet Andersson starred in the 1994 FIFA World Cup, scoring five goals to
help Sweden to a third-place finish. The giant striker’s main strength is his height and aerial ability, and he
is invariably a handful for opposition defenders. However, he is also comfortable on the ground. While not the
most prolific of centre-forwards, Andersson is a valuable team player creating a succession of chances for those
around him. He also represented his country at EURO 2000 but it was a disappointing experience. Sweden were eliminated
after the group stage. Andersson made his international debut back in 1990 against United Arab Emirates and is
one of his country’s most capped players. His retirement from international football came in April 2001 but his
last game in Swedish colours came in October the previous year against Slovakia in a FIFA World Cup qualifier.
Andersson has performed at the highest level in Italy, scoring 38 goals in his first four seasons in Serie A with
AS Bari and Bologna FC. Left Bologna for S.S Lazio in 1999, only to return after playing just two matches for the
Roman club. Played out the 1999/00 campaign in Bologna before moving on again. The towering striker was linked
with big money moves to some of European clubs but accepted a lucrative deal from Fenerbahce SK. Scored 11 goals
in 29 matches during the title-winning season of 2000/01. Suffered a setback with a broken foot in 2001 but was
fit again in time for the start of the 2001/02 campaign. |
