Instrumental in Fenerbahce SK’s league title triumph in 2000/01, Nikola Lazetic enjoyed a tremendous first season with the club despite being only 21 when joining. He even weighed in with five goals from his 30 appearances from midfield. The club’s passionate fans had taken him to their hearts immediately especially as Lazetic scored a goal in each of his first two league games. The player himself has admitted he thrives on the devoted support shown by the crowd at the Sükrü Saracoglu stadium. He had moved to Istanbul from FC Obilic, but had started his career with FK Crvena Zvezda. Lazetic achieved international honours for Yugoslavia at under-21 level before making the breakthrough to the full squad after the nation’s disappointment at EURO 2000. Played a significant role in the European qualifying matches for the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Korea/Japan. One of the most important players in the Fenerbahce line-up, the classy Lazetic will play an influential part in shaping the club’s future fortunes.
