FennecTheFox's Strategy Guide

Zerg vs Zerg (Lost Temple)

Description: This build order has already been posted on a website. It was used in a game at the WCGC. However, both opponents went Muta/Ling. This is a Muta/Ling vs Hydra/Lurker guide.

Now, before you start thinking to yourself "Why is he wasting his time posting a Muta/Ling vs Hydra/Lurker guide, when we already know that Muta/Ling > Hydra/Ling." Go tell that to someone like 1st~Tsunami. Hydra/Lurker can be a viable option vs Muta/Ling, but I do not believe that it's better than Muta/Ling. Often enough it isn't the strategy itself, but it's the execution of that strategy that matters most. A person that has experience using a second rate strategy, will do much better than they will if they had used the best strategy having no experience ever using it. They have the timing, the knowledge, and know how to EXECUTE IT.It doesn't matter where you spawn on Lost Temple, the build order is the same all the time. For those of you that don't keep up to date with builds, here it is.

  • Drones 'till 9
  • Overlord
  • Extractor
  • Drone
  • Drone
  • Drone (11/17)
  • Pool
  • Drone
  • Drone

Now here's where the build order can diverge. 1.) You can continue to build Drones 'till your Pool completes and lay your second Hatch, then produce Lings. You would only do this if you figured your opponent wouldn't rush. I.e. 4 pool/5 pool off Sunken.. 2.) If you think he will rush you, then you should stop building Drones, and save your Larva for Lings. You'll have 2 sets ready as soon as the Pool completes, and you'll only have to wait a few seconds later for a third Larva to pop out. Since you've chosen to build Lings it is advisable that you research the speed upgrade for them, making them more useful. You are sacrificing your 2nd Hatch build time, you may as well try to make the most of it. Yes, since you built 3 sets of Lings it will delay your 2nd hatch. Upping the speed for the Lings will delay it even more, but sometimes it's worth it. You can end the game right then and there with those Lings if your opponent went 2 Hatchery Pool. If you had built your Lings after your 2nd Hatch, you would have ended up with a better economy, but it's a bit of a gamble really. If I decide to make Lings and upgrade speed before my second Hatch is placed, I almost always press an attack.

If I reach my opponents base, and see that he has fewer Lings at the top of his ramp, i'll attempt to push up, and take those Lings out. If he runs back to his main with his Lings, and if I don't have a superior force, i'll assume he has more on the way, and so, there's no point to attack. I'll scout his base with a Ling in order to distract his attention, and i'll take the rest of my Lings and hide them in a corner of his base somewhere (out of sight from his creep/Lords.) I'll move that scouting Ling and run it out of his base to make him believe that I actually retreated. This probably won't fool a good Zerg player, and they'll often scout their base to see if you've hidden any Lings. Or, if he map hacks, he most definitely won't be fooled. ^_^

Lets pretend that he doesn't hack and he doesn't scout for those Lings you've hidden. It's advisable that you wait for your speed upgrade to kick in. Once that happens, you should take your Lings and run them to his Drone Line. Shift-click the Lings two at a time to each Drone. Kill as many as you can. This will put you ahead in the resource war. When he runs back to his main with the Lings from his ramp, you can split your Lings into two groups and attack the Drones from either side of the Mineral line. Keep pestering him until he aquires speed upgrade or until he commands a vastly superior number of Lings, then it will be time to retreat with what's left of your Lings. Try not to lose all of your Lings, unless it provides you with a worthy advantage.
