Duo's demons appeared first in Down Time in Hell, and reappeared in Dancin With My Mirror. This is a fic to explore their existence and origins. Liberties are taken with Duo's history and original characters from ESO appear.
Zechs had the food all ready to go and on the table. There was much more than anyone could have possibly cooked in the short time allotted to him. Zechs had cheated and called a nearby Italian restaurant and had more than enough delivered.
He sat down at the table and waited for the others to arrive.
Wufei came in, washed his hands at the kitchen sink and went over to Zechs, giving him a kiss. He smiled at the flowers. "Thoughtful," he said. Then his eyebrows went up. "Duo or Heero?"
"Duo," Zechs replied. "I gave him a thank you kiss for good measure."
Wufei shook his head. "Bad move," he said, sitting down. "You're encouraging him. He's going to try and get in your pants, you know."
Zechs blushed. "He has this sixth sense or something... gets me every time. Do you get that from him?" he asked Wufei.
Wufei shrugged. "I used to give them a hard time. He baited me back. It was friendly. But there was one time... it seems to occur mostly when you show that you have an interest," he said, remembering that day at Alfa's little base, and Duo coming out of the shower naked. "Once he gets the idea you are looking, it's no-mercy."
"Oh," Zechs said, shaking his head. "So, you're telling me it's a no-winner for the blond, huh... figures." He glanced around the table. "Tonight is Italian... I didn't make it all. Enjoy," he said.
They heard feet coming down the stairs and Duo bounced into view with Heero on his heels. The American was a picture, dressed in form-hugging worn jeans and a black t-shirt, with his hair down and unbraided. There was a slight edge to him, or so it seemed at first, but he grinned and quickly became the Duo they were familiar with.
"Hi!" he said, plopping down at the table. "I'm so hungry I could eat a priest!"
Heero sat down next to Duo, but said nothing.
Zechs opened his mouth, then closed it as his ice blue eyes widened. "Ummm.... ok," he managed, as he began uncovering dishes. Get you mind out of the gutter, Zechs thought to himself.
Wufei smiled to himself but covered it. "I don't think Zechs prepared one of those, but you might enjoy the cannelloni," he said deadpan.
"Cool," Duo answered, winking at Wufei. He piled his plate with everything, then piled Heero's plate. "Eat up, you're gonna need it," he said, with a wink.
Heero looked at the pile of food on his plate and then to Duo. Without a word, he merely dug in and began the decimation.
Zechs, who had brought a forkful of spaghetti up to his lips, paused in mid-air at Duo's remark, then ate. He looked over at Wufei for some clue to the 'you're gonna need it' reference.
Wufei's eyes had widened and he swallowed what was in his mouth quickly. "How did it go with the council, Duo?"
Duo paused briefly inhaling mass quantities. "Someone told a false story on Father Maxwell," he said, then shrugged. "They seemed to listen to me, though, will wonders never cease. We'll see, I guess."
Zechs paused in his meal. "It's good you got it straight," he said, then poured wine for everyone.
Duo shrugged, a touch cynically, cleaning his plate with a piece of garlic bread and going to seconds. "I guess we'll be leaving tomorrow," he said. "Sure has been fun staying with you, though!"
Zechs smiled. "It's been fun having you two here. Come back sometime," he said.
Duo nodded. "Might just do that. We might be coming back before too long."
"Fine," Zechs said, then looked to Wufei for confirmation.
Wufei nodded, hearing something in Duo's remark. He glanced at Heero. Something was going on, that was certain.
Heero finished his food, then sat back in his chair.
"Thank you, Zechs," he said simply.
Zechs looked over at Heero and a small frown creased his forehead. Something's up, he thought. "You're welcome. We have Tiramisu in the refrigerator for dessert if you want," he offered.
Heero shook his head. "No, thanks," he said, quietly, looking over at Duo. He placed a hand in Duo's lap under the tabletop.
Duo smiled brilliantly. "So what kind of after-dinner entertainment have you got cooked up, Zechs?" he asked happily.
Zechs looked over at Wufei again, then back to Duo. "Well, I hadn't really planned anything, Duo. We could adjourn to the living area and listen to some music," he said. Zechs you are about six miles behind here... Doof alert, he thought.
Duo tilted his head. "Okay," he said agreeably. "Something we can dance to, maybe?"
"Sure, Duo," Zechs said, thinking that perhaps he was off about something going on. "Fast, slow or a combination of both?" he asked.
"Combination," Duo answered promptly. "How's the wine?"
"The wine is wonderful," Zechs answered. "I'm going to go and program the player, " he said rising from the table.
Duo shrugged. "I guess we could do the dishes, Heero," he said, giving his lover a little smile.
"Hn," Heero said, standing and removing dishes from the table.
"Umm.... You can just stack 'em, Heero." Zechs said.
"It's not a problem," Heero said and began washing dishes.
'This is one of those twentieth century horror movies, isn't it?' Zechs thought to himself, suddenly.
"I'll help," Wufei said, getting up.
"Good! Heero washes, I'll dry and you can put up - we'll be done in no time!" Duo grinned.
Zechs moved into the living area. Finding his remote, he quickly programmed in selections for six hours of continuous play. He then moved some of the furniture around to provide space for dancing, if anyone wanted to do so.
In the kitchen, Heero washed dishes, handing them off to Duo. Occasionally, he would catch Duo's eye and wink at him.
Duo hummed softly as he dried the dishes and handed them to Wufei. Wufei smiled, unable to help it. Duo could be so contagious sometimes.
They were all done in record time.
Zechs had the lights dimmed and music played from the living area. He stretched out on the leather sofa and waited for the others to arrive. He smiled a little at himself. This was the first party-like occasion that had ever happened in the house since he had been there. This was nice.
Duo led the way into the big room. He saw Zechs sprawled on the sofa. 'The guy looks like a damn pinup,' he thought and the demons agreed, laughing and snickering. Duo glanced around. "Four of the deadliest human beings in the galaxy, right here," he said aloud.
Zechs chuckled a little, then nodded in agreement.
Heero walked up behind Duo and kissed his neck. "Hai," he said.
Duo turned around and put his arms around Heero's neck and kissed him on the mouth, deeply. Coming up for air after a few minutes he said, "Do you dance, Hee-chan?"
Heero nodded. "I dance," he said.
Duo smiled and began swaying to the music coming from the speakers, his arms still draped loosely around Heero's neck.
Wufei went over to the couch and settled down next to Zechs.
Zechs looked down at Wufei and smiled. "This is nice," he said, softly.
Wufei nodded. He didn't say anything though. He was watching Duo and Heero and admiring the picture.
Heero moved to the music as well. He watched his lover closely, enjoying this time with him. He knew what pressures Duo was under, but he also knew that small pockets of stolen pleasure were what helped to keep the mind together. He moved closer, pulling Duo against him as they danced together.
"Would you like to dance?" Zechs asked Wufei.
Wufei smiled. "I'm not much of a dancer," he said.
Duo smiled into Heero's eyes, moving his hips from side to side. His hair, loose and unbraided, swung gently over his shoulder and down his back.
"Doesn't take much," Zechs replied, with a smile.
Heero moved against Duo, feeling the heat radiating from his lover's body. "You look great... very nice with your hair loose, koi," he said, in a low voice.
"Thank you," Duo said. "You always look... perfect...." He kissed Heero's neck as they moved together.
"And miss this?" Wufei said softly, nudging Zechs a little.
"They're not a vid, Wufei," Zechs said, looking up at the couple. "Damned good imitation though," he admitted. Then he sighed. "Oh I get it, now. You've become bored with the big blond type. Now the dark-haired absolutely hot types are in. That's ok."
Wufei poked Zechs in the side. "Stop begging for compliments," he said.
Zechs jerked, moving his body away instinctively from the poking fingers. "Ok, I give," he said, then looked back up at Heero and Duo.
"I think we're being watched," Heero said, softly.
Duo grinned. "Of course," he said.
The music changed to another, faster song and Duo took Heero's hand and began jitterbugging.
Zechs pulled Wufei closer to him and out of the way of the two dancers. "Now, this could get wild," he said over the din of the music.
When the tempo changed, Heero adapted and soon, he and Duo were moving quickly around the small space. "This is fun," he said.
Duo laughed, delighted that Heero was keeping up with him. "You amaze me, Yuy!" he said, twirling the other boy around quickly.
After a few more bars, the music changed to something much slower. Heero pulled Duo against him abruptly. Leaning close to his ear, he whispered, "Ready to switch?"
Duo chuckled delightedly. "Okay," he breathed back. "You take the blond..."
"Hai," Heero said, giving Duo a quick kiss on the cheek. He moved back gracefully and leaned down, taking Wufei's hand. "Your turn," he said. "I'm resting."
Wufei blinked and looked nonplussed. "I don't..."
"Come on, Wufei," Duo said, smiling down, wide violet eyes twinkling with enticement. Duo's loose hair had fluffed out a bit during the fast dancing, and surrounded his shoulders like a cloud.
Wufei swallowed. He allowed himself one very brief look back at Zechs, as if to say, 'see what I told you? Once he knows....' He rose and moved forward, taking Duo's hands. "You know I don't do this," he said softly.
"I know... but there's a first time for everything, hmm, Wufei?" Duo grinned, his eyes carrying a knowing reminder of other 'first times'.
"Oh Duo..." Wufei sighed, and let himself be led.
Zechs shrugged as Wufei moved to dance with Duo. He swung his long legs off of the leather sofa to make room for Heero and was very surprised when Heero sat down very close to him.
"He'll be back," Heero said, "I'll just keep his spot warm."
Zechs' eyebrows rose sharply. 'Uh-oh,' he thought, though not un-pleased, 'Now they're both at it.' He looked down at Heero and settled into a comfortable lean against the arm of the sofa. "All right," he said, unconsciously moving away to gain his personal space back.
Heero looked towards the dance floor and nodded at Wufei and Duo. They looked good together. He took in Duo's long hair and Wufei's exotic eyes looking up over at Duo. He was totally aware that Zechs was trying to regain ground for himself. Heero had other plans. He sighed deeply, then leaned against Zechs further, with a slight grin, knowing that he had effectively pinned the tall blond pilot to the small space.
Zechs looked down at Heero, noting the vast amount of space at the other end of the sofa. Sink or swim, Zechs, he thought. With a sigh of his own, he readjusted himself against the sofa, draping an arm around Heero's shoulders, leaning him against his side. "Ok, you meant the entire spot," he said.
Heero chuckled. "If I'm crowding you...." he said, noting the expression on Zechs' face change to one of total apology.
"Uh, no... " Zechs said, as his aristocratic upbringing kicked in and denounced him for the faux pas. "You're fine," he said, all but pulling Heero Yuy into his lap.
Works everytime, Heero thought. He looked up at the tall nobleman, "Hey Zechs," he said.
"Yes?" Zechs answered, noting the depth of Heero's blue eyes.
"Psyche," Heero said, simply. It was something that he had picked up from Duo.
Zechs closed his eyes briefly. "Thanks, Heero." he growled.
Heero smiled a little to himself. "Relax, Peacecraft. We just got started," he said.
Duo placed his hands around Wufei's waist and guided him in a slow, swaying step. Wufei's cheeks warmed but he followed perfectly. Wufei constantly trained his body and his coordination and grace were beyond exceptional, as were all the former Gundam Pilots, but he also had an innate sense of rhythm and timing. The only reason he said he didn't dance wasn't because he *couldn't*. It had more to do with his inability to reconcile different conceptions of himself. But he could not resist Duo. The longhaired boy from L2 had unlocked his heart at a crucial time, when they were all about to head into deep space and confront the mysterious menace known as the E.S.O., or extra-solar organism. Wufei had come to give Heero Yuy a message, and ended up all but confessing his love for the Wing pilot. He never planned to cause any trouble for the two, whom he knew were together. But Duo had looked into his eyes and seen the pain, normally kept so deeply hidden, and the violet-eyed boy had opened up his own heart immediately and without hesitation.
Duo had seen right to the bottom of Wufei's soul, and had answered by giving the Chinese boy full access to his own, including sharing the one thing Duo clearly regarded as most precious - his lover, Heero Yuy.
From that time on, Wufei had given up the solitude that had marked him for most of his short life. For that gift, he would gladly give his life for Duo's, or supply any need he possibly could.
Duo smiled warmly at Wufei, reveling in the sight and feeling of the Chinese boy's graceful movements. He leaned closer and kissed Wufei sweetly on the lips, and said softly, "You look amazing, Wufei... good enough to eat..."
Wufei flushed, feeling the heat run through his body. "You are very wicked, Duo," he said softly, his voice breathless. But there was nothing in his eyes but warmth.
"I know," Duo admitted, ducking his head, but he couldn't suppress the grin or the twinkle in his eyes. "Come on, Wufei, it's going to be awfully quiet around here when we leave. How about a little fun...?"
Wufei swallowed, trying to keep his eyes from crossing. "As if I could say no to you," he said, with some spirit, however his voice throbbed a little with passion as well.
"You could," Duo asserted, his eyes tilting up mischievously. "But I'd cry..."
Wufei groaned softly. He locked eyes with the violet-eyed boy and by mutual impulse, they moved closer and their mouths met and opened in a deep, hot kiss.
"Yes!" Heero hissed, watching the two people he cared the most about in the galaxy lock in passionate embrace. He had seen the kernel of attraction on the Mantasail when all three had met in that incredibly hard confrontation. Poised on the brink of belief and disbelief, Heero's faith in the word love had been unequivocally and undeniably moved to the positive. He found the evidence in Duo and Wufei.
Next to Heero on the sofa, Zechs Merquise looked up at his lover through platinum blond bangs and felt his groin suddenly ache painfully. "Shit," he remarked, thinking that Milliardo Peacecraft should, out of respect, look away and not stare as he was doing. Fuck it, Zechs said to himself as he watched the two Gundam pilots with some admiration. The regard that Wufei and Duo had for each other was apparent. Knowing Wufei as he had come to know him, Zechs knew that these moments of total openness and trust were not to be trivialized. He readjusted his arms around Heero's shoulders. "Does this happen often?" he asked quietly.
The Perfect Soldier laughed, changing his beautiful face into something sublime in an instant. "I wish," he said.
Out of the corner of his eye, Duo glanced up and saw Heero sitting very close to Zechs, saw the Lightning Count's eyes focused on he and Wufei, and saw the expression. Duo leaned back, turning to focus fully on Wufei again. He smiled, seeing Wufei's lips were becoming slightly swollen. Duo reached up and pulled the fastener out of the Chinese boy's hair. "What's with Zechs?" he asked softly.
Wufei flickered a glance over, the corner of his mouth quirking as he saw Heero's position. He sighed. "He's... strange," Wufei said. "Sometimes he's... overconfident. Then, in a second, it all dissolves, and he seems certain that I'm going to leave without a word." Wufei shrugged. "And sometimes I'm find myself waiting for him to wake up and realize he's tired of me, of this... and then there are other times," Wufei added, thinking of earlier that day, "When he reminds me, a little uncomfortably, of Treize. Which shouldn't be surprising, I guess."
Duo pulled Wufei closer, resting his chin on the other boy's shoulder. "Not too," he said. "I'm in a real mood, Wufei," he said. "But I don't want to hurt you or what you have going on here..."
Wufei smiled. "I can tell about the mood," he said. "And don't worry about it. Contrary to the way we sometimes act, we are all grown ups. We'll handle it."
Duo sighed, closing his eyes for a moment. "Thanks, Wu," he said softly. Then he turned his head, his lips seeking the soft skin of Wufei's neck. The Chinese boy shivered, tilting his head back.
On the sofa, Heero looked over his shoulder briefly. "I like this song. You wanna dance?" he asked Zechs.
"If I can walk, yes," Zechs remarked.
Then he and Heero stood and went to the floor to dance.
"Oops," Zechs said, raising his hands and noting that Heero had his in the same position. "Ok. Rules of engagement. Who leads?"
Heero readjusted his hands, taking Zechs' "You drive this round," he said.
"That's a plan," Zechs replied, moving his arm around Heero's waist.
It felt a little weird at first, but Heero fell into step. Dancing with the blond man was a little like dancing with a Gundam. The height discrepancy was definitely a factor. "Hn," Heero remarked, then stepped closer, mentally noting that this was very different from dancing with Zechs' sister.
Zechs moved his arms around Heero, holding on to him even closer.
"Different," Heero said, leaning his head against Zechs' chest as he allowed himself to be led around the floor.
"Hopefully something pleasant," Zechs said, then felt strong arms tighten around his body.
"Kinda like dancing with a bear or something, but not bad," Heero answered.
Zechs smiled. "Russian, Brown or Panda," Zechs said.
"Toy Teddy," Heero replied.
Zechs chuckled. "I can live with that," he said. He felt Heero settle against him and looked down. "How's Duo?" he asked.
Heero took a deep breath. "He'll be better later. Right now, he's kinda edgy. Thanks for having us over here even though we've probably been a pain in the ass to you and Wufei," he said.
"Not as much a pain as you might think. It's actually been a good thing, Heero. This house has not seen a lot of company. You and Duo and Wufei have made me a little more fond of it," Zechs said.
"Ok," Heero replied. "That helps. Speaking of help..." Heero added, looking up and around. He raised his hand crooking a finger at Zechs for privacy.
Zechs bent down a little. "Would you be interested in a little operation?" Heero asked, quietly.
The look in Heero's cobalt blue eyes was all business. "Yes," Zechs replied, interestedly and noted the slight easing of tension in the Perfect Soldier's body.
"I'll get specifics to you when I can, but nothing to Duo. Ok?"
Zechs frowned slightly, then nodded. "Fine," he replied.
"Thanks Zechs. This is important to me," Heero said.
Zechs nodded. "He *is* important," Zechs said.
"Hn," Heero said and then leaned his head back on Zechs' chest, feeling a small measure of relief and determination. Mission Protect was widening.
Duo grinned, watching his lover dance with the tall blond. They looked extremely striking together. 'Enjoy while you can, Zechs,' he thought and heard the familiar, almost comforting snickers and chuckles from the demon gallery. The tempo of the music changed to something a little faster and Duo clapped, taking Wufei's hand and spinning him around, maybe a little less recklessly than he had Heero earlier. Wufei gasped and then laughed in spite of himself, catching up quickly with the new movement.
"I'm going to trip over my toes any minute and look like an idiot, Maxwell!" he cried, without the slightest hint of complaint in his voice.
"If you trip, you'll fall... Wufei all over the floor..." Duo answered, grinning wickedly. "You wouldn't look like an idiot, more like an invitation..."
Shaking his head, Wufei could not stop himself from grinning back.
Duo nodded approvingly at the expression on the Chinese boy's face. He twirled Wufei again, then caught him against his body, grinding his pelvis against Wufei's. He saw Wufei's reaction - his eyes nearly crossed - and leaned closer, his warm breath tickling Wufei's neck.
"Wu," he said, his tone suddenly breathless. "If I play... too rough tonight... you stop me, okay?"
Wufei's eyes widened and he felt a streak of adrenaline run through his body. His hand moved quickly, taking the violet-eyed boy's face as he looked deep into Duo's eyes. He said nothing for a moment, then softly, but with an underlying steel he'd always possessed, "I promise. Don't worry."
Duo sighed, as the voices in his head exchanged indignant observations, the general gist of which seemed to be he'd just hit a foul. 'Sue me' he thought. In hell, foul is what it's all about.
He kissed Wufei's cheek, then snapped his fingers, his expression once more wickedly seductive. "Let's change partners," he suggested, biting Wufei on the ear.
"Go for it," Wufei said, chuckling dryly. 'Look out Zechs...'
Duo slid over behind Heero, kissed his neck thoroughly and spun him around in a complete circle, then twirled him into Wufei's arms.
He then advanced, hips swaying, towards Zechs. "Don't mind me, I'm just cutting in," he said sweetly.
Zechs watched Duo approach and nodded at his comment. "Oh, ok," he said, feeling his body drop into the rhythm of music. Zechs danced closer to Duo. "It's a little known fact," he said, "That my father... had a secret passion for twentieth century music, which he passed along to me."
Duo laughed. "It's a not so little known fact that Howard has a non-secret passion for 20th century music, and it's a damn near unknown fact he got it from Prof G..."
Zechs's eyebrows rose. "Now that is interesting. Maybe we should all have a party together or something. I knew Howard liked the Beach Boys. He told me."
"That's hardly the extent of it," Duo snorted softly. "You mean you never explored the Peacemillion's music files?"
"Not extensively, no. What did I miss?" Zechs said.
Duo shrugged. "You name it... the Dead, the Floyd, the Who, right on up through grunge, rap and a rather frightening selection of girl groups of the 1990's. In fact I noticed your own collection is missing some rather obvious musts."
Zechs's eyes widened at the different groups that Duo named off. He laughed. "Like what?" he asked curiously.
"No Rush," Duo answered immediately. "Hard to figure... you strike me as a real Rush kinda guy..."
Zechs smiled fully. "No, no Rush. Got all of the Dead's stuff though. Father was a Dead Head," he said. "It was our manly secret together."
Duo grinned. "Well that explains your name anyway," he said. "Only someone on acid could come up with Milliardo..."
Zechs laughed. "Hey, he wanted to name me Free, but my mother wouldn't allow it," he said. "She told him that no one would follow Free Peacecraft."
Duo laughed. "No, you don't strike me as a 'Free'," he said. "So you picked 'Zechs'.... much better... sounds like sex..."
Zechs grinned. "Now you get it," he said. "I was going through a very intense Dumas period. Sounded Musketeer like."
"Um, yeah," Duo said. He looked Zechs up and down thoroughly. "So... wanna fuck?"
Cheers went up from the demon chorus.
Zechs mis-stepped, looking back at Duo, blinking. Placing a hand on his hip, he looked down at Duo with his cascade of rippling hair framing his face and body. "It's been quite awhile since ... well. "
"Since you fucked? No, man, no... if that is true I'm taking Wu back home with me," Duo said, continuing to sway his body to the music.
Zechs blinked again. "No.. I don't... No... I fuck." he said. "Yes, the answer is yes."
Duo smiled brilliantly. "Good," he said, grabbing Zechs' hand and heading towards the stairs. He stopped and looked back as if sensing a reaction. "What, you think I'm going to roll around on the floor when you have that nice huge bed upstairs? I don't *think* so... besides, we need other things, and I bet you have em up there, not down here."
Zechs shook his head as his hand tightened around Duo's. "I have them all over. Hold over from.... old times," he said. 'How the hell did this happen?' he thought.
"Old times?" Duo snorted. "You mean Treize liked you to have scabby knees. Sorry, no."
Zechs laughed, finding tears leaking from his eyes. He moved closer to Duo, then picked the energetic pilot up and hauled him over one shoulder. "No scabby knees," he said, glancing around for Wufei and Heero.
Duo dangled over Zechs shoulder. He too looked up, seeing Heero and Wufei in the midst of a liplock. He put two fingers in his mouth and gave a piercing whistle.
"Hey! We're going upstairs to fuck... well, are you coming?"
Heero broke the multileveled kiss, briefly. He saw Duo draped over Zechs' shoulder and looked back at Wufei. "You want to?" he breathed, kissing Wufei's lips and then his neck.
Wufei gulped slightly. "Are you kidding?" he said, wide-eyed. "We're waiting for what, an engraved invitation?'
"Ok," the Perfect Soldier said, then took Wufei's wrist, heading for the stairs.
