The Perfect Soldier by Vonceia

He was called Heero. It was a joke. 'Killer' would have been more appropriate. He had two directives. 'Fulfill the mission.' and 'Obey orders.' He lived alone, he slept alone, he learned alone and he acted... alone.

The scientists had created the Perfect Soldier. The only failing he had was he possessed the body of a human being. But that was in the next stage plans. Heero was the prototype. In a strange twist, they made certain that he was aesthetically pleasing in outward appearance. He had a routine regimen of diet and exercise to keep him fit and agile. They did not want a bodybuilder. That body type tended to stand out too much. Heero was to blend in at all cost. However, in contrast, his features were designed to please. They were created to engender a sense of security and comfort in the observer. It was a tactic to gain confidence. Once the subject relaxed his guard and let the beautiful boy get close, then elimination was no problem. His body type leant itself to easy camouflage and he despite of his boyish appearance, Heero was exceedingly strong. He had large, dark eyes and a mass of brown hair that was cut short in back, normally and fell over his eyes in front... childlike.

"Subject 01 - Ocular implant check," the tall, black woman scientist said. The wide screen in front of Heero blinked on and the image of the scientist, the room and whatever information Heero was receiving from his sense of sight appeared. Turning to the screen, the scientist saw herself in profile. "Check," she said, softly and then touched the electronic notepad she had in her hand. "Peripheral viewpoint." The image on the screen changed and the scientist confirmed and entered the results on the notepad.

"Check complete," she said and the screen blanked out. "Ok 01, Your assignment today has the following parameters. Age 15. Casual demeanor. Interaction with civilian population - allowed but not extensively. Mission - Find and eliminate target mobile suits at coordinates 2662 and 5444. Exit the building Southwest fence. Stealth mode. Once outside the main complex - mission begins. You have been briefed on cover demeanor. Target elimination at 0700 hours. Acknowledge."

Prussian blue eyes stared forward. "Mission Accepted," Heero replied.

"Carry on," the scientist said and watched as the young soldier stood and walked out of the door.

"This is fuckin' creepy," one of the technicians operating the monitors said. "Is he real?"

"Don't know, don't care, it doesn't pay the rent," the other tech replied.

In the room, the scientist looked up at the screen. "Begin track recording now."

"Acknowledged," the second tech said and turned on the Oc-View screens.

The Soldier took the fence at a running leap. On the other side, the boy ran through the thick carpet of grass and down the gently sloping hill. The wind caught in his brown, unruly hair as he ran down to the park. Once there, he did a somersault and flip landing sprawled out on the green, laughing.

A shadow crossed over his eyes and he looked up seeing the face of a little angel. The little girl was about four or five. In her hands she clutched a flower. "Are you lost?" she asked.

The blue-eyed boy looked up and for the barest of moments did not have an answer.

The scientists in the room frowned and began making notes. The lady scientist was just about to tap the comm to supply a reply, but stopped and sighed to herself as she heard 01 speak. She glanced at her colleagues who were weighing the reply. Finally, they returned their attention to the screen and made notes about the appearance of the puppy into the situation.

At 0700 hours, the targeted mobile suits exploded and the blasts did the calculated amount of damage to the surrounding area. 01 stood and watched as the mission progressed as planned. Suddenly, one of the mobile suits fell in the wrong manner and toppled over into a civilian living complex and destroyed that building as well.

01 frowned and then he moved. The little girl he had met in the park with the dog lived in that building. As he approached the site, 01 saw the little dog, lying on its side, lifeless. In the rubble just ahead, he saw a little stuffed and charred toy bear which had the same color ribbon that the little girl had worn in her hat.

For a moment, 01 looked up at the building, then down to the bear. He dropped to one knee and stared at the dog for a moment. Finally, he stood, turned his back and walked away.

Aftermath.

The scientist looked at her subject in the chair. His face was cool and impassive as before, but her senses relayed that something was not as it seemed.

"What is wrong?" she asked softly.

"I don't understand the question," Heero returned.

"Did the death of the dog or the child. have an effect on you?" she asked.

"No," 01 replied after the slightest hesitation.

"Why not?" the scientist asked.

"Because they were not within the parameters of my mission," he replied.

The scientist nodded and then cut all access to the room. She came to stand in front of 01. "That's a good answer, even if it is a lie," she said. "Look at me."

Heero looked up at her.

"People see what they want to see. It is good to know for infiltration purposes. For the good of the project, I should erase a part of this memory," she said and then bent down closer. "In a short while, I am to pronounce you fit to serve. You are to be the Perfect Soldier, soulless, without emotion. Someone had the bright idea that these things would be ideal. I was wrong. You are the proof of my error in logic. In spite of all that I have accomplished with you, there is still a grain of humanity that rises up and causes feelings, stirs emotions, no matter how small. You think, therefore, you are not a machine. In order to serve humanity, you must have the ability to understand that which you serve. You possess that capability. Use what I have given you as well as what I have not. I will begin my final experiment. After this, you will not remember everything, but enough. Good luck Heero."

Standing, the scientists called for a replay of the day's events. She then wiped some portions of it and entered it into the log as "Not relevant." She watched as the blue-eyed boy looked back up at her.

"Dismissed," she said and watched as he stood and left the room. "Feed imbedded REM code Alpha Code - 01 Heero Independent. Submit resignation of scientist Alpha 1009-53A. Assign 01-Heero operative for scientist elimination."
