My first and closest encounter involved a death threat. At 10.15 p.m., November 16, 1977, my friend Ero Talvila phoned me to say that a couple who subscribed to his psychic magazine called him. They said they'd seen a UFO heading north on Bathurst Street at Dupont Street, which is in central Toronto. We lived in a high-rise apartment building five miles to the north at 2895 Bathurst one block north of Glencairn Avenue, on the east side of the street. We faced the back of the building.

Ero suggested that I take my camera outside and get a photo if I saw the UFO. I told my wife that I was going out for a short walk. I put our pocket camera into my coat. Outside our apartment building, I walked south a half block. Then I saw a police car parked on the closed gasoline station lot, probably looking for speeders. I crossed over to the car and asked one of the two policemen if they'd seen or heard of anything strange nearby. He said '"No."

At that moment, we all saw a yellowish-white cigar-shaped light at a 45 degree angle with about a 30 foot length at tree top elevation moving at about 5 mph. I completely forgot that I had my camera and just gazed at it in awe as it moved north. The policemen stared at it with their mouths open in surprise. One said 'What is that?" They then drove away quickly, heading south, forgetting to turn on their car headlights.

When I got home, my wife told me that she answered a phone call while I was out. She said it was from a man who sounded like he was in the military. He told her that our daughter would die if I told the media what I'd seen. When she asked me what I'd seen, I said it wasn't important. I said it was probably just a prank call. Only Ero , whom I told the next day, and the policemen, knew what I'd seen. The policemen didn't know my name, and Ero never played pranks. My wife would have known his voice on the phone. I made a note about the incident and put it away. My daughter is all right, but my wife developed breast cancer two weeks later. She lived another seven years. Also, two weeks later, my ufologist friends Harry Tokarz , Joe Muskat and I incorporated CUFORN as a non-profit group in the
Province of Ontario.
