I was quite intrigued to see the Royal Ballet School perform – the students were all very good indeed, presenting a number of short pieces.
I sat beside a dance instructor and dance school owner, who I talked with about dance and theatre during the break, which was very interesting. She had two former students in the programme: Anniek Soobroy and Emma Rigby. Both were excellent. I heard that 88% of the final class had already found employment, one of the guys was going to join the Vienna State Opera Ballet.
The lighting was nice – plain colour washes, spotlights, few gobos – not inspiring, but at least it wasn’t distracting, which is always good for dance.
“Columbine”: Very nice, simply lilac costumes, pastel colours and different age groups, therefore a simpler choreography – most notable were the beautiful colour patterns on stage.
“Hornpipe”: Made me laugh; first the stage filled with young boys, hopping about, then the elder boys replaced them; the piece ended with both age groups dancing together. The sailor outfits and hats were adorable and the choreography was lovely, if repetitive.
“A Touch of Tango”: Black and red costumes, clear-cut and precise, in contrast to the fluid, if rough movements and gestures. Lots of almost 'ground work' – rolls, falls, rising up – a very energetic piece, compelling and modern.
“Concert Fantasy”: I’ve seldom seen such a lovely pas-de-deux. Both dancers (Momoko Hirata and Zachary Faruque) wore blue unitards, the movements were sinuous, graceful, and longing – sensuality and romance in perfect unison. Definitely one of my favourites.
“Le Voyage”: A slightly more modern piece, costumes reminiscent of rehearsal outfits, simple dark colours. Again perfectly executed, with a wonderful Anniek Soobroy.
“Enchanted Garden”: Lilac costumes, flowing and smooth – reminded me of flowers and butterflies, The Secret Garden – I enjoyed it tremendously.
“Summer Twinings”: Absolutely adorable ‘boy-meets-girl’ story with four wooing couples. Costumes 50s style, lots of rolling on the floor for the guys. A really cute, entertaining piece, although there were a few slips during the performance.
“Prelude and Fugue” and “Mendelssohn Concerto” (Swan Lake costumes ;D): Both pieces were lovely, well executed.
