        Auggie:

        7/31/98

Auggie was purchased at the May 16,1998 GLFA show in Detroit. He is A black mitt and quite a nice looking guy. I fell in love with him the First time I held him. That was because he gave me kisses. Must be he knew the way to my heart. I had taken a carrier with us, just in case I found the right ferret.

Since Sandi had also bought one, along with Brandon, I bought a harness and lead for Auggie. He ended up riding most of the way to Jackson on my lap. I gave them instructions for setting up the other cage, and they left me in Jackson to attend the wedding of Roger's niece. Roger met me at the church.

Auggie was a year old in April or so his papers said. He was a small guy and I bought a small harness that fit him just right. He was a rescue, since his previous owner was laid off and could not afford to take care of him. You could tell that he had not been mistreated in anyway. I bought him through Rainbow Ferretry that’s where I bought Hallie the year before.

It was very obvious from day one, that Hamilton did not like the newbie. He was very mean to him, and Auggie is a lover not a fighter. Auggie is a lot like Banjo, just does what he wants to do without bothering anybody. He lays at my feet just like Banjo does, but he will let me hold him sometimes.

They get a lot of separate play times, but I do let them out together more and more. With the arrival of Ashbury, Hamilton leaves Auggie alone more. Then he heads for the bathtub for safety. If not there, he'll go in their cage and go to sleep.

Tonight is the first time that we left all ten of them out together and let them fight. That's because it's the first time that Ashbury and Auggie seemed to be winning the fights. And when that happens, eventually they'll start getting along. We watched carefully to make sure no one was really getting hurt. Although Hamilton has a hole in one ear, it's not serious. I put some Bactine on it with my finger, didn't want to pour it in his ear. It's less damage than what Hamilton has done to Ashbury.

Auggie has gone from being a small guy to being one of the largest ferrets here. He has to have put on at least a pound. We have no idea why, could be better food, and could have been younger than the papers said. Could have been almost anything. He is on the heavy side, but a lot of the growth has been in just getting bigger, not fatter.

He also does not use the litter box. I don't punish those that don't, but when I see one using it while out, I try to reward them with some ferretone.

He is not big on playing with me, but I have seen him playing fairly roughly with Ashbury. They are cage mates, and get along real well. So maybe they decided that today was the day to start standing up for themselves.
