WebQuest Worksheet
Begin by right clicking on the “Crestwood High School” link on the left. Select “Open in another window” You should now have this site open. For this activity, we will be using aerial photographs. The activity is a scavenger hunt. With a partner, use the website to complete this worksheet and hand it in to me. The group that correctly completes the scavenger hunt first will receive a prize.
Aerial photographs:
In the middle of the image that appears you will see Crestwood High school. This will be the starting point for finding the soil conservation (or lack thereof) features of Howard and Winneshiek Counties from this orhtophoto. Remember that zooming in and out on this may make it easier to find certain features.
1. Zoom out to the 5 m pixel scale, and then click on the hand pointing East. Following the Pole Line Road east from the Two Mile Corner one mile, there is a light colored field on the east edge of the picture with vertical lines in it. Click on the vertical lines. This will center them in the photo. Zoom in to the 2 m pixel scale. Observe the lines. What are they?
2. Click on the right edge of the picture in the light colored field (next to the hand pointing East). Do NOT click on the hand! Near the center of the new picture, you will find dark vertical line which goes from the Pole Line Road to the top of the picture. What is this? On each side of the dark line is a narrow dark colored strip. What is this?
3. Approximately 1 inch to the east of the vertical line is a dark colored field with light spots in it. What are the light spots?
4. Select the 10m pixels scale. Click on the hand pointing to the Southeast. Near the center of the picture is a light colored field with thick dark curving lines that start on the north end, make a horseshoe type outline and end back at the north end. Click on that field. Select the 2m pixels scale. This field is an example of ___________________.
What are the lines that periodically cross the light colored part of the field that is between the two dark colored parts of the field?
5. Select the 10 m pixels scale. Approximately two inches north and one inch east of the center of the photo are three dark lines about ¾ inch long running NW to SE. Click on these lines. Select the 2m pixels scale. What are these lines? (Hint: they are the same as the lines in question 1)
6. In that same picture, approximately one inch south of the dark lines is a field that starts at the farmstead and curves to the northwest. This field is an example of _______.
7. On the south edge of the previous field near the edge of the photo, there are some trees. Click on them. These trees are along a small stream and are an example of a _________________________.
8. Zoom out to the 10m pixels scale. Click on the hand pointing northwest. Then click on the hand pointing west. Zoom into the 2m pixels scale. This will take you back to CHS.
