WHERE IS ACCRINGTON?
OLD ACCRINGTON MARKET A
QUIRKY CORNER
Accrington is in Lancashire. It is the meeting place of the world famous
Accrington Intellectuals and the less famous Accrington Literary Club. It is
a celebrated centre of UFO activity drawing thousands of people to the moors
above the town.
People pass through Accrington on the train, rolling over the Victorian
viaduct; they sometimes wave or make other poignant gesticulations.
Accrington has several churches, a public library, a thriving Veterinary
Practice, an extensive indoor & outdoor market, a fine Town Hall and a Budgens
supermarket.
Wilson College on Batteridge Terrace has a fine Neuropteran Department
and offers studies related to the Koradjis and other exotic tribes. Several
Accringtonians have gone on to found colonies in the Cramolites/Bughassie-Tojitre.
Accrington has a Brewery and many pubs, notably the Queen's Head
which is a venue for many splendid Theatrical Entertainments. Alec Guiness once
performed a turn here and was ejected from the stage - see his "Blessings
in Disguise".
In 1961, a meteorite struck the church spire of St.Andrew's, Vogle Square,
and set it alight. The church was saved by the prompt actions of the local Fire
Brigade and has recently become a venue for the Accrington Intellectuals, despite
problems with pigeon infestation. There is a fine WW1 cenotaph in Haworth
Park, which is also home to the Haworth Art Gallery which has the largest collection
of Tiffany Glass outside the USA. There are fine views of the surrounding hills
from the park. Henbane was first cultivated on a commercial basis on a hillside
near the town in 1902. Accrington was a centre for Pyrrhonism in the 1880's,
leading to future radicalist tendencies in the populace.
