Spinoffs

Final Fantasy Tactics There is no denying that the greatest Final Fantasy Spinoff is Final Fantasy Tactics, released 1998 for the PS one. Just as the title suggests this is a excessively deep tactical RPG of war the required some skill and planning to get through. It used the Job System and took it to new levels in the Final Fantasy version of "Risk", and spun it into a daring game that allowed for an unprecedented amount of customization. The unique game play and one of the most moving soundtracks of the franchise (although not handled by Nobuo Uematsu) easily lived up to Final Fantasy Standards.

There were also a handful of Game Boy Final Fantasies, such as FF Legend I, II and III and FF Adventure. All enjoyable games, but none that are true Final Fantasies, although their names were changed when brought to the US to capitalize on the real Final Fantasy brand. The Legend games are actually part of Square's SaGa series, and Adventure was the first chapter of the Seiken Densetsu series which were followed up by Secret of Mana on the PS one. Then there was Final Fantasy Mystic Quest (1993, SNES). This game with it's simplistic gameplay and dumbed down, throwaway story was sure to make it an absolute flop.

Square also released some other games featuring some favorite characters. Enrgeiz (1999, PS one) was a mediocre fighter that featured FFVII's Cloud, Sephiroth, Tifa, Yuffie and Vincent.

The lovable chocobos famous to the series also got to appear in there own line of games. Chocobo Racing was a enjoyable little cart game, while Chocobo Dungeons 1 and 2 featured some supercute versions of several FF mascot characters.

Final Fantasy spells, characters and weapons have aslo made some cameo appearances in numerous other Square games such as Parasite Eve 2, Secret of Mana and Chrono Trigger.
