Yellow Chocobo

This is the basic chocobo available at the start.

It can travel over snow and grass only.

It can't travel over mountains, brown patches, water etc.

It's just a quicker method of travel early on in the game.

Green Chocobo

This is second up from the yellow chocobo.

It can travel in the shallow waters (like the little bronco), but that's about it.

Blue Chocobo

Blue chocobos can travel over shallow water, rivers and brown areas.

Black Chocobo

Black chocobo's can go anywhere the blue and green can.

It can travel over mountains.

It can’t go over deep water.

Gold Chocobo (The Ultimate)

The ultimate chocobo can travel absolutely anywhere on the world map; up mountains, over rivers. You name it.

Pass over the ocean and get Knights of the Round in the far north-east corner.

It is also the greatest for chocobo racing (At the Gold Saucer)
