Jesus Came to Serve and Not to be
Served.

In recent weeks, there had been reports of violence in
different parts of the world. In Pakistan (bombings of the
church in Islamabad), in India (Muslim-Hindu violence in
Gujarat State), in Australia (rioting by asylum seekers in
northern South Australia) and in the Middle East (incidents
of suicide bombings by Palestinian terrorists and the
subsequent retaliation by the Israeli Army). And it looks like
there will be a lot more violence especially in the Middle
East. Will full-scale war break out over Israel's treatment of
Mr. Arafat's Headquarters Building in Ramallah on the West
Bank? And will the Hamas and Fatah groups, both with
very close links to the Palestine Liberation Authority, return
with more suicide bombings in retaliation against Israel?

2 Peter 2:10-11: Which Celestial Beings?

In 2 Peter the author is condemning false teachers, and specifically their pride and presumption. We would understand it if he then aimed some verses against their slandering angels in some way, but suddenly he refers to "celestial beings" that are not angels, for the angels are presented over against them in the very next clause. Who could these celestial beings be? Have we in fact entered some science-fiction world of dark monsters? Are these simply mythological, or a figment of Peter's imagination? And if they are real, what is their significance for Christians today?

A "Wineskin in the Smoke"

Ps 119:83 "For I have become like a wineskin in smoke, yet I do not forget Your statutes. (NKJ)

The Psalmist here is referring to an experience in his life where he sees himself on the brink of ruin. He uses the term "wineskin in the smoke" as an illustration of how he felt.

Drinking containers in ancient times were usually made of skin. These skin bottles were often used out in the wilderness to hang in a tent when the use of fire was needed inside and there was no chimney. The skin would absorb the smoke for a long period of time.

Immediately the skin would become hard and shriveled because of the smoke and afterwards it turned black and was useless.

A striking figure for a man of God to refer himself as yet even in this state he "would not forget God's Word
