These pictures were taken at the Karangahake Gorge on September 1, 2005.

Karangahake Gorge is part of a beautiful national park on the way to Waihi Beach, which is part of the scenic Coromandel region. Spring has just sprung in the Waikato and we were blessed with a beautiful, temperate sunny day for this trip. After months of rain and damp, grey skies we deserved to see the sun!
There is a path that ran all the way along the shore of this river. We followed it for a good couple ours. The majesty of the trees really cannot be conveyed by a mere photograph. They were tall and dense and plentiful. It was just fabulous scenery.
Where that giant highway is, there used to be a mining village on the other side of that road. Throughout our walk, we saw a few remnants of the mine that was, such as a giant wheel and some bits of iron thingies. There used to be a whole town here.
Further strolls along the river...
...and further along. The little bits of rapids here and there made me optimistic that we might see a waterfall. I am such a sucker for waterfalls :) I was delighted to find two on this hike. The first one, the pictures did not turn out, but the second one is coming up shortly.
I enjoy a good desktop wallpaper shot, so I got in a few  close-ups of the bits of rapids.
This was where I tried to convey the scale and got blinded by the pretty sunshine :)
The second waterfall, from afar...
...and from up close :)
A final look at Karangahake Gorge. One of the better hikes of New Zealand so far, and I think we picked just the right time of year. This was a memorable day. I'd like to thank Brooke for the ride, and the company!
