These pictures were taken in and around Wellington during the week of July 18, 2005.

Wellington is a major port city. Here is a view of it from the water.
A closer view, again from the water...
...and an aerial view, courtesy a lookout point at the top of the cable-car terminal.
And here is a view of colourful downtown Wellington from up close:) Looks like a movie set, doesn't it?
This is the parliament area. The building here is known as the "beehive" and housed parliament during the early days,  and during recent renovations. It now houses offices for the members of parliament.
This is the actual parliament. It burned down in 1989 and was rebuilt. It has special features embedded in the foundations to help keep it intact during earthquakes.
The famous Wellington cable car. This used to be the embryo of a public transportation system, but is now mostly used by tourists. The very short ride stops at four intervals en route to the top, which is the botanical gardens and planetarium.
What would a New Zealand city be without a botanical garden? :) Perhaps I picked the wrong time of year to get this one at full impressiveness, but I enjoyed my visit. See how green and wet everything looks? That's winter in New Zealand. Water, water, everywhere :)
And another look at the botanical gardens :) They really were lovely. I bet this is a fabulous place during summer when everything is in bloom.
And a more reflective picture, a typical New Zealand one, looking out, forever, toward the ocean...
