Fundraising Sail - Friday, March 16th

Sail San Francisco is having an inaugural sunset sail & mock battle between the square-riggers The Hawaiian Chieftain and the Lady Washington on Friday March 16th from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., $125 per person ($95 of it is tax deductible). There will be seafaring music, hors d'oeuvres, libations, and action (cannons fired!) & a special nautical gift. Advance reservations only.

"The McNish Classic" is scheduled for Saturday, August 4th, location: Channel Islands Harbor. The race is about 17 miles 3 miles of weather work, a great reach to Ventura about 7 miles, then the return leg is a reach and about 3 miles of Spinnaker work. The Proudfoot's made it a couple of years ago and had a good time. We sure would like to see some boats from the bay area down for the race.

I have a 28’ (length overall) gaff sloop named PEARL for sale.  Currently berthed at the Emery Cove Marina (Berth C-28). Built by the DeVries-Lentch Company in Amsterdam in 1932.  Carvel construction with teak planks on oak frames.  The hull is in good shape, the sails are fair, 6 HP outboard runs well, the autohelm runs well, the interior woodwork is in good shape and the deck needs work. 6'-6" beam and draws about 3'-4".  I have owned her for 10 years.  Hauled out, bottom painted this winter.  I may be moving from the USA in a few months and would like to find a good home for PEARL.  If you know anyone in your organization that might be interested in buying her please contact me.  I would sell PEARL to a good home for $5,000 as is.  I can email a photo to you.

The Aeolian Yacht Club & Thursday Night Rowing & Dining Society is putting on a "Celebration of Wood Boats" on September 29th & 30th at the Aeolian YC in Alameda. It will be a group gathering of all sorts of wooden boats, power, sail, small craft. It will not be open to the public. The AYC expects to have berthing available for 25 to 40 boats, and plenty of car parking. They will have a guide boat at Jack London Square at appx. 11:30 am for a parade down the estuary under the bridges. Boats with drafts of over 8’ are not recommended to attend. Caitlin Schwarzman’s successful program, that was run out of Mercy High School in 1999 and 2000, is expanding. She will be broadening the scope to include students from other Bay Area high schools, and the program is now affiliated with Dawn Riley’s America True organization. This year is a transitional year, but fund raising efforts continue. The program will continue to be run on traditional tall ships. Jim Shubin is an MMBA member who previously owned two Farallone Clippers, first Mistress and then #7 Stella Z. He has been using soy diesel in his boats for years. First with Stella Z, which had a Perkins engine, and now with his new boat which has a Volvo engine. Jim notes that "Boat US" did an article on soy a while back that talked about soy use in boats. Dr. Rudolf Diesel promoted the benefits of agricultural fuel. In a speech given at a technical institute in Germany in 1911 he said, "The Diesel engine can be fed with vegetable oils and would help considerably in the development of agriculture and the countries which use it." According to Joshua Tickell, www.veggievan.org, "Biodiesel fuel is very lubricating, which makes it better for Diesel engines than diesel fuel. The best part about biodiesel is that it requires absolutely no engine modifications. To use it, you just pour it into the fuel tank."
