| Soujiro's mother was a prostitute and his father a president of a Rice Company. Soujiro was adopted by his father's family and treated badly. One night Soujiro sees a bandaged man killing a police officer. He tries to remain quiet but breaks a branch behind him trying to hide. ShiShio hears the twig snap and says he has to kill Soujiro because he saw him. Soujiro, of course, is very frightened. ShiShio is about to kill him and Soujiro starts grinning like a maniac. ShiShio then asks him... "Would dying make you happy?" ShiShio says he would let Soujiro live if he brought him some food and fresh bandages. Soujiro agrees and sneaks ShiShio into the rice storage house Later that night, Soujiro retires to the rice storage house to bring ShiShio his night dinner of three rice balls and some fresh bandages. ShiShio knows that the family who is living in this house is beating on Soujiro and mentions that even when they beat him like this, he keeps smiling. Soujiro explains that when he first came here, he used to cry or get angry but when he smiles, they lose interest. He tells Soujiro that he's wrong because he's weak. He then tells him "The strong survive and the weak have to die" |
| Later on that night, the grandmother of the family questions why they have no more bandages in the house. The father lightly dismisses her saying that Soujiro most likely took them. The grandmother still insists that he could not have finished an entire roll. Then the younger son chimes in and says "Isn't that criminal that the police are looking for burnt all over?" They then figure it out and the whole family runs outside with sticks and knives calling for Soujiro. Soujiro comes they question him about the criminal and the bandages and Soujiro denies everything. They scream at him that they know he is lying. The family tells him that they are going to kill him. They say that maybe they can put the blame on the criminal and make money saying they found a new victim and the location of the criminal. They chased after Soujiro and he bolts like a rabbit. He screams for help. "Anyone" he cries. "Someone, anyone, please save me!" No one comes. Soujiro hides under the house and clutches ShiShio's kodachi. "Please ShiShio...save me..." Eventually the older of his cousins find him and goes after him. Soujiro kills him. The family hears the scream and says "He screamed like a coward. Shows his heritage!" The family all laughs...until Soujiro comes out from under the house! ShiShio(who has been sitting in the warehouse eating the whole time) comes out and asks if Soujiro's crying. Soujiro turns to him with a smile on his face and says he isn't. However, we discover later on that he was. ShiShio asks him if he would like to come with him and Soujiro says yes. As they're walking, Soujiro asks him if he can be strong. ShiShio replies that he will be the only one stronger than Soujiro. |
