Whose Fault is it????
A lesson on Cause and Effect

What do we mean by
Cause and Effect? Really, it's just the reverse of what we are used to thinking about:

The game was cancelled
because it rained.
(What happened is the effect)
(Why it happened is the cause)

Some things that happen in our lives are unavoidable. For example, if there is an earthquake, flood, or other natural disaster, some of the damage may not have been predicted or prevented. However, many of the things that happen in our lives are a result of individuals that are not acting responsibly. How about this example:

A student stays up late at night watching TV even though his parents have said it was time for bed. As a result, he oversleeps and is late for school for the third time. The school rule is that on your third tardy, you must serve after school detention. Because he is at detention, he misses baseball practice. His coach won't let him play in Saturday's  game because he missed practice. He blames the school because of its strict tardy policy.

But whose fault is it, really???

Activity: Look in The Desert Trail or The Hi Desert Star for an article where someone has not made a responsible choice (cause), and what happened (effect) as a result of that choice.Print out this activity sheet to complete the assignment.
