What are Compound Sentences?

A compound sentence contains two sentences joined by and, or, or but. These words are called conjunctions. Compound sentences express more than one complete thought. For example:

Mr. Bergey enjoys writing.
(One complete thought, right?)
+
Mr. Bergey's favorite author is Agatha Christie.
(Another complete thought, right?)
=
Mr. Bergey enjoys writing and his favorite author is Agatha Christie.
(Two complete thoughts joined by the word "and".)
