Using Descriptive Words

Writing is like painting a picture using words.

Would you do all of your paintings in black and white? Would you always paint the same thing? Of course not! So why use the same words over and over again in your writing.Positively Boring!

Use descriptive language to create wonderful "word pictures". Nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and prepositional phrases can all be used to create more vivid word pictures. So, let's review these parts of speech:

Adjectives descibe (modify) nouns.

There was a long line to buy lunch. (What kind of line? A long one.)

Adverbs describe (modify) verbs. They tell how the action (verb) is being done.

The crowd waited patiently. How did they wait? Patiently!

Prepositional phrases can tell us where.

A crashing sound was heard in the distance.
