What is a Linking Verb?

'Linking verbs' are links between the subject of a sentence and another noun or an adjective. Examples:

Mrs. Bergey is a teacher. (links to the noun 'teacher')
Mrs. Solomon is intellegent. (links to the adjective 'intellegent')
 

Did you notice that some linking verbs can also be helping verbs? What's the difference? Linking Verbs link nouns to nouns or nouns to adjectives. Helping Verbs help other verbs. If you say 'Mrs. Solomon is teaching', then "is" becomes a Helping Verb.
