How to use quotations in dialogue:

Put quotes around what the person said if you are quoting their words exactly as they were said (this is called a 'direct quote').

"I was hoping we could have pizza for dinner."

Put a comma before the quotation mark when used like this:

She said,"I was hoping we could have pizza for dinner."
Or, put a comma before the quotation mark when used like this:

"I was hoping we could have pizza for dinner," she said.

When you interupt the sentence, it is written like this:

"I was hoping," she said, "we could have pizza for dinner."
When a new person starts talking, you need a new paragraph. For example:

She said,"I was hoping we could have pizza for dinner."
"Me, too," said Dad.
"Well, let's go then!"

Put question marks and exclamation points inside the quotes when they are part of a direct quote. Example:

She asked,"What kind of pizza do you like?"
"Pepperoni!"
