Jeff, what I KNOW about Buck Creek Cemetery in Marion County, IN could fit in a thimble. However, the background I have from my family could contain clues to the whereabouts of this old cemetery. My grandfather, Jesse A. Hutsell, was born 1879, Acton, Franklin Twp, Marion County, IN and died 1952, Indianapolis, Marion County, IN. The majority of my information came directly from him. His father was Isaac C. Hutsell, b. 1852, Fortville, Hancock County, IN, d. 1888. His mother was Rebecca Kathryn Weaver, b. 1843 IN, d. 1912, Marion County, IN. Isaac was of German descent and Rebecca was Sioux Indian. Her family, George and Joana (Hardwick) Weaver, lived in Brookfield, Shelby County, IN after the 1860 census. I tell you all this to lay a foundation.
I have found Weaver and Hutsell families in a small area that included Marion, Shelby and Hancock counties, IN. Through the middle of this area runs Buck Creek. And within a few miles west is Johnson County. Isaac Hutsell died at a young age (36) when my grandfather was 9. Two of Isaac's children died in 1882, Mattie and Charlie. They are all buried in Buck Creek Cemetery. I have a death certificate for Mattie but have never found one for Isaac or Charlie. There is no cemetery listed for Mattie. Joana, Rebecca and her descendants are buried at Crown Hill in Marion County, IN. My grandfather told me that there used to be a log church next to the cemetery. The railroad ran nearby. On the other side of the railroad was the fair grounds. There was a train wreck that caused a huge fire. The fairgrounds burned down as did the church. I have walked the Buck Creek Cemetery that is listed in Acton, and I have walked the Old Pioneer Cemetery. I have found a few family names from collateral families in the Pioneer Cemetery, and have talked to people that remember a fire. But NO one knows exactly where this cemetery is. It may be that there are just no stones for my family members, but there should be records somewhere. I have contacted the Franklin Twp Historical Society but that didn't help either. I would really love to know exactly where this cemetery is. Let me know what you find out.
