A strong symbol of Japanese modernisation and technological prowess is the Shinkansen. Shown here is the 500 series of the bullet train, the current (1999) world record holder. There is a newer 700 series too, which although no faster, offers a more stable ride. Shinkansen trains have an excellent safety record, making them one of the safest, as well as stylish ways to travel.
