Garland however, did not pursue after Zidane, whom Kuja abandoned but would not kill. The youth was taken in by Tantalus and raised by Baku. He grew up into a very good thief and also Tantalus was a Theater group, so he had aquired acting skills. Baku was hard on the boys he raised, but he was the only father they knew and he cared about them as much as they cared about him. Zidane was rebellious to a point, when it came to needing to assist others outside of Tantalus. He had a love for life and people that was not normally found, and Baku, although he put up some fuss or made Zidane fight for his beliefs, let the boy go after a few good bruises. At the beginning of FF9, Zidane and Tantalus are given instructions by Baku that they will kidnap the Princess Garnet Til Alexandros and bring her to Lindblum. They set off on this mission, which later he finds out was issued by Regent Cid of Lindblum. After meeting the Princess, Zidane was entranced by her. He had a real liking for girls, infact some of Tantalus would say that's all he cared about, but Garnet was different. At the same time he went to kidnap her, she was trying to escape right on their theater airship, and as they met after he ran and chased her about, she begged him to kidnap her. He did, and after a series of fights out of Alexandria, and Steiner somewhat joining their party, refusing to let the Princess go with thieves, they touched down in Evil Forest. Barely making it out with their lives they set to Lindblum, abandoning their damaged airship and leaving behind a petrified forest and their friend Blank. First they arrived at Dali, and witnessed first hand the creation of Black Mages, of whom looked very similiar to Vivi, only in adult forms. Going to Lindblum, he encountered his friend Freya and won the tournament of the Hunt. He was worried now that he and Garnet would part ways, and they did for a while. Garnet refused to stay in Lindblum, and headed back to Alexandria with Steiner after putting the rest of the group to sleep at the dinner table. Zidane went on to Burmecia without Garnet, hoping that she had not gone on ahead there, since at one time that seemed to be her destination. Instead she went on a round about trip back to Alexandria to confront her mother. He and Freya of Burmecia with others made it through. There they witnessed Black Mages destroying people, as well as the place had for the most part been evacuated. He saw Queen Brahne behind it, overseeing her destruction, as well as Kuja. The group then fought Beatrix who took them down, and they fell into unconsciousness, after Kuja and Beatrix for some reason decided to let them live. Afterwards, the group set out to discover more of Queen Brahne's plan, and tried to thwart her, but failed to. Zidane discovered that Garnet's life was in peril and they headed off to Alexandria, where they rescued her, with the help of Beatrix and Steiner. They needed to go on to the Iifa Tree, where mist was being produced and the black mages were being created from it. Facing the entity there that guarded and produced the mist, and finding out Kuja was only using the mist that the entity created for his own diabolical purpose, they raced out to meet a confrontation with Kuja. Kuja however, waited, and was fought by Bahomut, and merely scraped by it. He had assisted Queen Brahne in drawing out the Eidolons from Garnet, which Bahamut was one of them, and Queen Brahne, being greedy turned on him. He then took back over control over Bahamut and used the dragon Eidolon <Guardian Force> against the Queen and her people, killing them all, and departed. Zidane and group then went on to Madain Sari, which they had met Eiko and discovered she came from there, where the Tribe of Lost Summoners were from. The gang went on and faced Kuja at the Sand Castle where he made Zidane and a couple others retrieve the Gulug stone for him from Oilvert, but they managed to escape with it. They chased after him and freed Lady Hilde from him as well as saving Eiko. They went back to Lindblum where Lady Hilde told of Kuja, and of his plans, and that he had kidnapped the ship from her but had not harmed her. Afterwards the group took the new Airship that Cid had worked on and headed onward after the 4 shrines, acquiring the stones of elements and they entered into Terra after Kuja. There Zidane meets Mikoto who tells him some pieces of his past, and also encounters Garland, the true mastermind behind all of the destruction. Garland tells Zidane that he is to be a great leader for the Genomes and will become more powerful even than Kuja, who will lose his soul. Mikoto is the only other Genome with a soul and the others await the merging of Terra to Gaia. Zidane and the others, after a battle for his own soul, confront Garland and defeat him. Meanwhile, Kuja took the chance as opportunity and succeeded in stealing the souls from Gaia into himself, to give him the chance to Trance and be free of Garland, so he would not have to worry any longer about losing his own soul. He returned to meet Garland on the surface and kicked him over a ledge after Garland mocked him. Zidane was confused as to what was going on and he held his hand when Kuja killed Garland, after all, Garland was pretty misled in his views of superiority. Afterwards Garland told Kuja that he had done all this for nothing and that he would die anyways pretty much when Zidane was fully mature so he had gained nothing from this. Kuja went mad and fought against Zidane and the group, and afterwards finally achieved Trance, but he knew it was for little good. He destroyed Terra and what remained merged with Gaia causing many creatures of Terra to appear there. Zidane escaped with the genomes and the rest of the group, and they headed back to Gaia. He then built up and went on to face Kuja in Memoria, a land created by the memories of the group, and an opening to the life crystal which Kuja planned on attacking to destroy everyone, since he was denied his right to live. Garland assisted Zidane in making it through memoria, and they fought Kuja once again, after he succeeded in cracking the crystal. An entity afterwards of death, named Necron appeared and they defeated him marginally, and afterwards Kuja teleported the group to safety. Zidane returned to see Kuja who was dying, in the Iifa Tree, and became trapped within after Kuja apparantly died. Later on, he somehow escaped and made his way back to the others, putting on a dazzling show with Tantalus at Alexandria and winning Garnet's heart.
