Chocobos

Chocobos may consume loads of your time in ff7
but there worth it in the end because you can get the greatest summon in the
whole game, Knights of the Round! You can also race these stupid birds and could
end up with some handy items, GP or materia. The first time you ever come across
Chocobos is when you need to cross the swamp with that evil snake in it, all you
need to do is catch one and hears how:
Catching
Chocobos
All you need to catch a
chocobo is chocobo lure which you buy from Choco Billy and you may need some
greens for backup (you also buy these from Choco Billy). Once you've got these
equip Chocobo lure and go out into the world map and find some Chocobo tracks,
run up and down them until you battle with a chocobo and some enemies. If the
enemies look tough then throw the chocobo a green. Kill the enemies without
hurting the chocobo or things could get ugly (don't use "all" or
summons) and.... bingo! you've got yourself a chocobo. You can now run around the
world map with it at high speed or you can get off it and release it if you
don't want it or send it to the stables (you have to buy them from Choco Bill
after you've got the Highwind.
Stables

When you have bought some stables (10,000gil each) and you
catch a chocobo you can send it to the stables, they will be sent to the pen
outside the barn. You can have a maximum of 4 chocobos in the pen (if you catch
any more the first one that you caught will be automatically released).
Moving
chocobos
Go back to the barn and talk to
Choco Billy, you can ask him to move one of your chocobo into the stables choco
Billy will tell you what type of Chocobo they are and you will then get to name
it.
Mating
chocobos
When you've got the two chocobos you want to
mate (male and female) talk to choco Billy and tell him to mate your two
chocobos select the nut you want and make sure that you have a spare stable for
the new born. It's is pretty much pointless mating chocobos unless your trying
to get Knights of the Round (see Mountain&River
chocobos)
Feeding
Feeding you chocobos increases
their speed, stamina and intelligence depending on what type of green you feed
it. This only effects the chocobos when you race them in gold saucer. Talk to
Choco Billy and buy some greens off him (the more expensive the green then the
better it effects the chocobo... of course). talk to Billy again and tell him to
feed you chocobos select the green and how many you want to give to the chocobo.
The chocobo will make that annoying swarking sound and it will tell you how the
green has effected the chocobo.
Here is a list of all the greens and what they
do (if the greens do the same thing then the lower down in the list the better
they are.
- Gysahl: Stamina up
- Krakka: Intelligence up
- Tantal: Speed up, Intelligence up, Stamina up
- Pahsana: Intelligence up
- Curiel: Speed up, Stamina up
- Mimett: Speed up, Stamina up
- Reagen: Speed up, Stamina up
- Sylkis: Speed up, Intelligence up, Stamina up
For those who have loads of gil
then go and visit choco Siege in the north continent near that snowboarding
village and buy some greens from him. Siege is a bit of a gimp who can't
remember a thing and tells you some very useful information about chocobos, but
only after you've done it! However he does sell you some good greens.
Racing
chocobos
This is where chocobos start to
get good and where they win you prizes. By now you should know how to race
chocobos because you had to do it when you got out of the desert prison. To race
them just go to chocobo square in gold saucer and talk to Easter (the freaky
looking one in the pink, to the left of the screen). If you have at least one
chocobo in your stables then you can register one to race. Your chocobo will
start in class C with the other crap chocobos and if you win three races then
you will move up to class B where you will move up to class A if you win 3 races
in this class. If your chocobo is really good and you can win three races in A
class then you will move up to class S. When you win a race you can either chose
to get an item or GP, the higher the class that you are in then the better the
item or more GP.
Tip/Cheat: hold L1+L2+R1+R2
this makes you stamina slowly rise
Tip/Cheat: hold L1+R1
for extra speed
Breeding
Chocobos
This
is where chocobos get very tedious and frustrating because you can get 5 main
different types of chocobo and 7 other kinds. To get the chocobo that your after
you have to find the right tracks on the world map, find a male and female of
each and find the right nut from about 20. You also need to have at least one
free stable for the new born. and to really piss you off sometimes even if you
have the exact correct combination they won't even give birth to the chocobo
that you want and you have to wait another hour or two for them to be able to
mate again. But if you follow these guidelines then I reckon it will only be
about another tree hours until you've got Knights of the Round and whippin some
monsters ass. Before I go on all day lets get going.
Here's a list of all the locations of every
chocobo track on the world and what type of chocobo you'll catch on them:
- Chocobo Ranch Area (east continent):
Poor, Weak
- Junon Area (east continent): Fair, Poor
- Mideel Area: (small island below east continent)
Great, Fair
- Icicle Inn Area (north continent): Wonderful, Weak
- Wutai Area (long island on the far west of map):
Average, Fair
- Rocket Town Area (west continent): Mediocre
- Gold Saucer Area (west continent): Good, Average
Mountain
and river chocoboMountain
River
To get one of these Chocobos you need to
find either two great chocobos or a great and good chocobo (see list above) of
opposite sex. You'll also need to find a carob nut which you can steal or get
from a red dragon when you have defeated it. You can find it on the grassy areas
of the north continent. Beware these dragons aren't as soft as they look, they
can take a fair beating before the decide to keel over and die, but the good
news is that their attacks are pretty crap and they're very slow. If your not
too sure on how to mate chocobos then see: mating
chocobos. You've probably already guessed that Mountain chocobos can run
over mountains and river chocobos can run over rivers (only the shallow bit.
Mountain-River
chocobo
Mountain-River

Yes you've guessed it, when you
mate a mountain and river chocobo together you get a Mountain-River chocobo that
can run over mountains and rivers! (uncanny name eh?). Well you get it from
mating a mountain and a river chocobo when there both at A class with a carob
nut.
Golden Chocobo
Now for the final and ultimate in
transport, the Golden chocobo (ocean chocobo). This beauty can go absolutely
anywhere on the whole world map. To get this super chocobo you must mate a
Mountain-River chocobo with a Wonderful chocobo (see chart above to find it) of
the opposite sex. You also need to get these chocobos to, at least level A.
Wonderful chocobos are very hard to get, you'll probably get 1 from 20 chocobo
fights. You need to mate them with a zeio nut which you can steal from the
goblins on goblin island, which is a long thin island to the far east of the
map. so get mating and hope for the best. When you have a gold chocobo you can
run over oceans which means you can now get knights of the round!, its a small
island on the north east. You can't see it on the map so just wander around for
a while. Now you've got the greatest materia ever you can take on Seperioth and
defeat him in two moves.
Now that wasn't too hard was it!?
the Golden chocobo!
