Sagebrush Singletrack Series - Race #3
Olympia St.
March 5, 2000
by JRA (the former mountain biker formerly known as Kevin)
My apologies to all the racers for not getting this done in a more timely manner. You all rode great and have my admiration.
We had a really great turnout again for the third race of the Sagebrush Singletrack Series. A total of 59 racers turned out to do battle with each other and the trails of Olympia St. Our intrepid course designer (Gary Larsen) tried to auger himself into the hillsides of Olympia while marking the course and wound up with 22 stitches to boot. A big thank-you to Gary for all his hard work and I hope that he is healed up very soon. Riders from all over the Northwest represented the following cities: Spokane (a large crew) / Boise, ID / Lewiston, ID / Moses Lake / Yakima (a large crew) / Everett / Bellevue / Walla Walla / Mason / Union Gap.
More thank-you's to Becky Henry (registration), Robert Croft - Garrett Miller - Miles Colburn (course marshals & course take-down), Jay Webber (course marking), & Jerry Markee (BBQ).
Our series sponsors deserve a huge thankx from everyone for their support of local mountain bike racing: ATOMIC ALE BREWPUB & EATERY [Richland], BICYCLE BARN [Walla Walla], KENNEWICK SCHWINN, RICHLAND SCHWINN, MARKEE'S CYCLING CENTER [Kennewick], BIG RIVER BIKE WERKS [Kennewick], SAGEBRUSH CYCLES [Yakima], and last but not least ELITE ATHLETE [Yakima].

Goto the finish order for this race.
The Beginner Race
Nine people turned out for the Beginner Class and Tammy Hastings was the very first one to cross the finish line. Great job! Tammy took first place in the Womens Division and was followed by Stephanie Markee. Overall, Garrett Miller claimed first place honors followed by Brent Baldwin and Dave Saager. Phil Smith (the 12 year old version) rode a really great race and claimed fourth place.

The Sport Race
Another large field of 39 Sport Class riders took off into the desert to chase down the Experts. Steve Henry rode the whole race in first place (that I could see) followed closely by Mojo Kater ... that is until the last little loop near the finish line. Steve put the hammer down on that section and rode away to claim his third straight win in the Sport Class. Mojo took second and John Serkowski took third. Alison Haug and Jaime Freisz were the only two Women racers in the Sport Class. Alison took first and Jaime claimed second. A Boise, ID singlespeed rider came over to race against the SS regulars and won the SS class followed by Derk Thomson and Rich Hallen

The Expert Race
While he didn't start off in first place, Mark Painter bided his time and rode away at the end to claim first. Rick Uhlrich followed up for second and Steve Somers took third. After suffering a debilitating mechanical on the last lap, Tyler Hurst ran the last 1/2 of the course to take 4th place. That's an awesome race!
