Sagebrush Singletrack Series - Race #4
Finley Hills
March 19, 2000
by JRA (the former mountain biker formerly known as Kevin)
The wind was a howlin' but that didn't stop 37 people from showing up to ride some of the best trails around the Tri-Cities. The total lap length was about 10.5 miles so we shortened up the race somewhat due to the wind. We didn't have injuries although one rider tried awful hard to burst his water bladder by landing on his back. We think it was a pedal strike that caused the fall. The wind took it's toll on riders with one of our experts not finishing up until after everyone had left. We were just getting ready to sweep the course when he managed to crawl in. Riders from all over the Northwest represented the following cities: Spokane / Coeur d' Alene, ID / Hayden, ID / Vancouver, WA / Lewiston, ID / Moses Lake / Yakima / Everett / Otis Orchards.
Great job to everybody who showed up today to race! The next race, and the final in the Sagebrush Singletrack Series, will be April 2 at the Chamna Natural Preserve (aka ACME) in Richland. Hope to see you all out there.
The following people helped out and deserve much appreication for their efforts: Mrs. Hansen (finish board), Robert Croft - Jack Miller - Tony Tran (course marshals), & Jay Webber - Tom Bosch ("facilities").
Our series sponsors deserve a huge thankx from everyone for their support of local mountain bike racing: ELITE ATHLETE [Yakima], SAGEBRUSH CYCLES [Yakima], ATOMIC ALE BREWPUB & EATERY [Richland], BICYCLE BARN [Walla Walla], KENNEWICK SCHWINN, RICHLAND SCHWINN, MARKEE'S CYCLING CENTER [Kennewick], and last but not least BIG RIVER BIKE WERKS [Kennewick].

Goto the finish order for this race.
The Beginner Race
The race was to be dominated by the juniors ... in fact, other than one individual, the beginners were ALL juniors. Matt Krichner on a cyclocross bike put together out of select pieces took the top spot followed by Garrett Miller and Miles Colburn. We had a female junior racer (Crystal Morgan) decide that she wanted some more riding time so she took the last half of the regular course and tacked it onto the beginners half lap. Good job, Crystal!

The Sport Race
22 Sport Class riders took off into the wind. The wind pretty much blew them up the first hill into the hike-a-bike section ... but they would pay for that help later after they crossed Ayers Road. John Serkowski turned in a really good race to take first place honors with Greg Guensch and Robert McEachern taking 2nd and 3rd. I had my SS with me and was all set to race but something came up at the last minute and I wasn't able to. Derk Thomson was the only SS rider today and managed to a very respectable placing out of the whole sport class field.

The Expert Race
Despite a wrong turn, Jeff Adkins from Coeur d' Alene, ID finished the experts two very hard laps and took first place honors today. Smokin' Mark Painter, who raced in a no-sleeve jersey and shorts ... BRRRRRR!, cranked in strong for 2nd followed by Rick Uhlrich.
