IMBA EPICS reprinted from IMBA Trail News May, 1999

To celebrate the spirit of epic mountain bike rides, IMBA has joined with Patagonia and RockShox to create IMBA Epics. At the first ride, held April 28 on the 29-mile “Edge” trail near Fruita, CO, 45 riders enjoyed a grueling, technical and delightful day of cycling on singletrack and doubletrack in the Book Cliffs. The ride included a portage down a waterfall.

IMBA, Patagonia and RockShox will host three additional Epic rides in State College, PA (June 10); Slatyfork, WV (August 4); and Downieville, CA (August 12). Each celebration ride features the participation of top pro mountain bike racers, IMBA leaders, local land managers, and riders representing the general public. Each Epic is limited to 40-45 riders.

All IMBA Epic selections are trails that are generally open to the public (weather conditions and seasonal considerations permitting). Thus, cyclists who aren’t able to participate in the Epic celebrations will be able to pedal Epic loops at other times.

The Epics concept is designed to highlight the adventure of mountain biking. While the appeal of off-road cycling is multifaceted and unique for each individual, adventure and challenge usually top the list.

“IMBA is known for promoting volunteer trailwork participation and trail access solutions,” says IMBA executive director Tim Blumenthal. “But the underlying reason for connecting with IMBA is a passion for riding your bike on singletrack trails in beautiful, natural environments.”

RockShox has been IMBA’s No. 1 bicycle industry supporter since ‘96. Patagonia, a new IMBA sponsor, recently introduced Endurance wear, a line of off-road cycling clothing.

COACHES CORNER by Randy Coleman
Bike Fit Records:

Your logbook should also have pages that list the measurements and fit for all of your bicycles. In the unfortunate event that one is STOLEN you will be able to dial in that replacement bike before the first ride. Or maybe you're like me and at least once a year you're sure that a slight adjustment will yield more power, comfort, aerodynamics, etc. etc. The first time I went through this seat adjustment hell it taught me a valuable lesson. Don't move anything until you first document the original position. When all the little adjustments yield none of the desired results it's important to be able to move things back where they started.

At a minimum you should record the following.
A. Saddle height
B. Saddle for-and-aft
C.1. Stem length
C. 3. Saddle height over bars
C. 4. Saddle to bar center
C. 5. Saddle to bar drop
E. 2. Saddle tilt in degrees.

There is a "Bike Fit" form available on the the Flyers Website for your use: or send me an email and I'll get you the form.

WASHINGTON STATE MOUNTAIN BIKING MAINTENANCE by Mike Curley

For those who don't know, Mike is the IMBA representative for Washington

Some of you may or may not have heard, but a big thing for me and my focus as the IMBA rep is to promote trail maintenance. This is, somewhat, the idea IMBA had as their vision. I have, however, added a little twist. For those of you who know me, I feel that trail maintenance is our best form of advocacy. I also wish to promote local clubs, shops, and riding areas open to single track mountain biking use. My original plan was to have a local club/IMBA at (whatever site) work/ride weekend. These will be two day events where you can work one day and ride the next or visa-versa. Or you could really endear yourself to me and work both days. Camping would be free and I would have some sponsors to help out with some swag. I was trying to pick areas that are open to our use that typically are not maintained by the mountain biking public. Well I have been working off-and-on at this goal. There has been many obstacles along the way and I need to keep this progressive. Obviously I have picked places located around Tacoma area thus far (although I am up for suggestions). The reasoning for this is that I need to start somewhere, and with just myself coordinating this at this time I don't wish to bite off more than I can chew. I am hoping all of you will help me promote this as I would like these to turn into annual events (WMBA) with more popping up all around our state. I have written a maintenance resume for myself to help gain a trust with the land managers since this may be our first meeting with them. At this time I have scheduled Aug 21st and 22nd in the Cowlitz River Ranger District (formerly part of the Randal RD) The area is in the Sawtooth Mountains located just out side of ELBE about 1.5hrs from Tacoma. The second party I have is for the White River Ranger District just outside of Enumclaw. About 1.5 hr drive from Tacoma on the dates of Oct 2nd and 3rd. Another location was in the Hood Canal Ranger District at Lake Wynoochee. The tentative date is July 10th and 11th but at this time they are dragging their feet and they may wait too long for me to set this up. I also have some time for another date in Oct. I would like to have around twenty to thirty volunteers for each event. If we get more that is fine. I would like people to RSVP (253-566-0359) at least one week in advance so I and the land manager can better plan projects and also for the amount of swag needed. Although If people just show that will be fine but pre-registration participants will get priority when it comes to swag. I am hoping to get local clubs to sponsor an event by coming out with several crew leaders and to also lead rides in the area. (I will supply mapping) If I cannot get a sponsoring club the rides will be self-exploratory. I am also looking for local shops to sponsor with a couple great prizes. And I am working on some corporate sponsors. These parties are going one way or the other with whatever I have to offer. If any one is interested in any capacity either as a sponsoring club, shop, or individual please contact me at (253) 566-0359 and please help spread the word.

Till our trails meet
