5:30am on ABC's Radio National
Monday - "Many A Slip"
Chairman Ray Plomley reads out some pieces with mistakes in them, and we hear which of the 2 teams is quicker at spotting them. The teams have two per side. One side comprised of women, the other men. The first person to spot a mistake presses a button - if it's a member of the womens' team you hear a bell and if it's a man, you hear a hooter. Sometimes traps are prepared for the teams. For instance, sometimes a word that has no real meaning is invented. Sometimes there's an odd, obscure word that sounds wrong, but has a meaning. These even a pianist who might confuse 2 pieces of music - the panel have to know what they both are. When it comes to scoring, the chairman's decision is always final, whether he's right or wrong.
Tuesday - "I'm Sorry I'll Read That Again"
This comedy of sketches and songs recorded before a live audience comes from the people who were the Goodies and the men behind Monty Python. "I'm sorry I'll read that again" . . . it's classic and very off-the-wall.
Wednesday - "Round the Horne"
With its memorable catch phrases, brilliant scripts and Kenneth Horne as its deft anchorman, Round The Horne easily assumed its mantle as one of the most consistently funny radio series from the 1960s.
Thursday - "My Word"
Classic BBC panel game, with well-known comic writers, Dennis Norden and Frank Muir. They team up with guest panellists and get down to some heavy word play. They define, derive and delineate their way through the English language.
Friday - The Goons (repeated Saturday at 3:30pm)
For decades the Goons have delighted radio listeners of all ages. The trio of Peter Sellers, Spike Milligan and Harry Secombe set a standard for radio comedy that has never been equalled.
They were the genesis of a particular style of English comedy. Everyone from Monty Python to The Young Ones is indebted to them, and their surreal humour is as funny today as it was in the fifties.
Radio National brings the best of the Goons to Australia each Friday Morning and also on Saturday at 3:30pm.
Shock your children, startle your parents - become an addict! Once you try them, you'll be back.
Saturday - "Just A Minute"
"It's Piffle! It's The Shipping Forecast! It's Dating Agencies! It's Windpower!" And these are just some of the subjects hilariously tackled by radio's favourite chatterers for Just A Minute. All - hopefully, but usually hopelessly - without repetition, deviation or hesitation.
Sunday - "My Music"
This Classic BBC panel game, with well-known comic writers Dennis Norden and Frank Muir. They team up with partners and hum, sing and identify their way through the world of music.
