Tom's first steps into the Australian comedy industry were taken at Sydney University during a stand up comedy competition staged during 1996 - he won. During the same year he exhibited his outstanding comic talent by making it through to the national final of the "Comic of the Year", and featuring as Runner Up in the Triple J Raw Comedy NSW final for that year. During 1996 and 1997 Tom appeared as a feature act and MC in most of Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra and Adelaide's top comedy venues. 1998 saw him continue in this vein and add the University circuit to his credits. A feature of Tom's performance is his character work. One of his characters "Malcolm" achieved cult status in Sydney during the 1997 - 98 period. Malcolm has been described as "a paranoid mature age student". Tom also has the rare ability to build music into his comedy, with parodies of famous rock tunes being a huge audience favourite. In his time as a stand-up, he has performed on thecomedychannel, supported the Tokyo shock Boys, and written and performed for O'Loghlin on Saturday night. In 2001, he has his own show at the Melbourne Comedy Festival entitled 'Pirate Copy'. Triple J might also know him from "Tom and Subby's Average Moments in Science" "Tom and Subby's Traffic Report" and "Tom and Subby's Request Line"
