Good looking dishes
There’s nothing funny about his mother’s cooking, says popular comedian Jimeoin. By Darlene Gill
Irish-Australian comedian Jimeoin says he learnt to cook by washing potatoes. "I didn’t cook a whole meal. I just started off cleaning potatoes. Then boiling them. It was a long time before they let me near the meat."
Jimeoin reckons he’s a self-taught cook, but he must have learnt something from his mum, whose recipe for Cabbage and Bacon he’s willing to share.
"As a child I would have this once a week," he says. "Cabbage and Bacon is lovely stuff. The cabbage likes salt and the bacon gives it what it lacks. "
His mum’s cooking, though, is not without it’s problems, Jimeoin says. "She likes to experiment too much. She had a lot of disasters, but it’s all coming good now. I’ll eat anything because of my mum’s cooking."
"I like cooking, but I don’t have a big repertoire," he says. His secret for making culinary masterpieces is timing-knowing just when to put the ingredients in. He says you know to put things like mushrooms and green peppers in later because they feel soft. "I taught myself to cook from the feel of food. I like chopping onions and frying garlic, but all the rest is hard work.
You know, the best way to cook something is to start by cooking onions. Then you start thinking about what to cook. For dessert, I'll start by chopping onions and then I’ll cook Lemon Meringue Pie. Even if onions aren’t involved, it gets you geared up for the food"

Describe your sense of humourStupid. Really stupid. It's not political, it's not preachy, but it makes me laugh.
What's your best/favourite joke?None of my jokes work in print. Come and see me at the Town Hall during the Comedy Festival. But this is how it starts: "Knock Knock..."
Worst moment on stage?I got into a fight in Esperance on stage, which turned into a bigger fight.
Best moment on stage? When i first started getting genuine laughs, which was after my fourth gig.
