Hefner and their song "China
Crisis"
London EP

2. Spearmint: Sky
3. Junior Blanks: Taste
4. Penthouse: Capt. Dano
Plastic Cowboy Recordings :

Hefner's song is not quite
a tribute to the eponymous sensitive synth band of the eighties,
but it does rely more on organ and less on guitar than their usual stuff.
Spearmint are anthemic indie-rock, Junior Blanks sampled and looped like
a less laid-back Massive Attack, and Penthouse (recorded by Tom Cullinan
of Quickspace) are noisy and boisterous, a bit like a combination of Captain
Beefheart and the Stranglers. Mar 1999

China Crisis
Its not the spiritual, its
not the intellectual,
Its not the merely pitiful, that makes me feel this way.
Its not the walk that I take through the park to her place,
It's the breath she takes inbetween the words her mouth makes.
Oh curse my mind for not ceasing my mouth when the moment was perfect.
She said 'Shut up, wake up,
I can smell the coffee why can't you when its so near',
She said 'Hold it, embrace it,
these feelings are so real but you just choose to ignore them.'
More like a sister to me, when
she was 23,
She drew a picture of me, the likeness was uncanny.
We bless the notes in margins, in the books from the libraries,
They tell us what to feel, how to love and when to heal.
Oh curse my mind for not ceasing my mouth when the moment was perfect.
She said 'Shut up, wake up,
I can smell the coffee why can't you when its so near',
She said 'Hold it, embrace it,
these feelings are so real but you just choose to ignore them.'
She said 'Screw it, just leave it,
the moment was perfect but it won't be for much longer.'
Comment (from the band):
We always try and be unpredictable about how and where we release songs.
This is one of my favourite Hefner recordings and lyrics and as far as
I know there were only a 1000 copies of this made (it was a split with
3 other bands on Plastic Cowboy records). We don't intend to always be
this obscure and eventually it is my hope that a lot of these songs will
be available to more people, especially those over seas.
