Symbols of Wicca

The many important symbols used at celebrations and in ritual are too numerous to show them all here. However, here's some of the history and significance behind some of the most commonly used.

The pentacle is to Wicca as the cross is to Christianity, the Crescent to Islam and the Star of David to Judaism. It is the most recognized symbol of witchcraft. It is also one of the most misunderstood. The four lower points symbolize the four elements - air, earth, fire and water. The fifth, and uppermost, point symbolizes the great communal energy, spirit. The spirit is the uppermost in this hierarchy of forces, and rules over the other four. The pentacle is worn by many Wiccans both as a symbol of their faith and for protection from negativity.

The Ankh is an Egyptian symbol which is used by some Wiccans in ritual. It is a hieroglyphic the spiritual meaning of which is love, life and reincarnation. The symbol resembles a key, and is thought by some to represent a point of entry to the spirit world.

The Triquetra is a Celtic symbol which has its roots in early Pagan cultures. It has been used for many thousands of years in various forms. The word itself comes from the latin word for "three cornered." To Wiccans, the three points symbolize the three aspects of the Goddess as Maiden, Mother and Crone. This is paralled by the theme of life, death and rebirth which also factors into Wiccan tradition. It has also been used by Christians in later years to represent their Holy Trinity.
