| Kurei is Recca's half brother and was also born in Hokage village. They share the same father, Ohka, but his mother was Reina. Reina was a proud woman who liked to boast about how her son would become the next Hokage leader. When Recca was born, and it was discovered that he also had the power of flame, Kurei was considered cursed because usually only the first son of the flame caster had the flame, but if the second son also had the flame, then the first was not capable of ruling as the next leader. Thus, Kurei was condemned to death and was spared only through the intervention of Kagerou. However, Kurei and Reina were banished to the outskirts of the village, and lived there in misery and shame. Every day, the boys would pick on Kurei, beating him up and generally treating very badly. Kurei soon got the idea that if Recca died, everything would have been all right (No doubt implanted in his head unconsciously by the actions and words of his mother), so he set out to kill Recca. (Recca was only 1 then, and Kurei, 5). Luckily, he only managed slash through Recca's cheek. Kurei was then imprisoned, and Reina died of an illness that had been plaguing her for a long time. When the samurais came to wipe out the Hokage, Kurei was still in prison. When the prison was enveloped in flames, he got so terrified that he unleashed his flame and blew an escape route out of the wall. After that, he picked up the knife he had previously used, bent on killing Recca.
Just when he reached Recca, he found Kagerou using the time manipulation technique to send Recca to the future. Not wanting Recca to escape, Kurei jumped into the portal and was sent to the portal as well.
Now here's the part in which the anime differs from the manga. In the anime, it is not stated how he came by Kouran Mori, but in the manga, it is said that Tsukino, Kouran's wife (who would want to marry HIM?) found Kurei and adopted him as her own son. Soon, Kouran learnt of Kurei's power. He implanted a bomb into Tsukino and threatened to set it off if Kurei did not obey his orders. This was the beginning of Kurei's training to become a cold-blooded killing machine.
