Frequently known as the King of Aquarium Fish it reaches a length of about 23
to 25
centimeters, certainly in its native habitat, the Amazon Basin and Rio
Negro river.
PARAMETERS
When purchasing obviuosly one selects those that are round bodied with no
deformations,
the eyes should be bright, coloured red and sized in proportion
to the body, Fins need to be
erect and respiration needs to be regular. Its
always sound advice to examine faeces.
Do NOT pay too much attention to body colour as hormone treatment can often
disguise this.
TANK SIZE
Varies according to the breeder but range from as small as 10 gallon up to 55
gallons.
WATER
My research indicates variations but normally within the range of 6 to 8pH:
Karbonic Hardness between 0.2 and 1.5 which is about 300ppm.
Temperature seems consistent at 28 to 30 degress C.
FOODS
Every breeder has his or her special and sometimes secret recipe, but common to
nearly all
of them appears beef or turkey heart; dry pellets; baby cereal; raw
eggs; spinach; cauliflower
and spirulina algae flakes.
Live foods are consistent with brine shrimp; daphne; grindal and white worms.
Quite a number
of experts avoid bloodworms on the grounds that they harbour
disease.
Light
Much variation here but fluorescent lighting predominates and Shirase of Japan
reckons on
about 14 hours per day. He further suggests the measurement of 10
watts per 60cm length
of tank.
