Some Cake Decorating Ideas

Use paint brushes & small spatulas with thick icing coloring to create portraits, landscapes and more!
Use ready made cakes such as this store bought jelly roll cake, supported by a chopstick, then decorated like a cake you would make from scratch. This candle cake has a real tealight candle placed on top to give the appearance of a real candle. This cake was made for a Candle Party the host was giving.
Think of unusual containers, such as this terra cotta tray for this cactus cake. Think outside the box!
Made for my Realtor mother-in-law, you can see three dimensional designs are quite impressive. Just stack sheetcakes, using rods as supports, and cut to shape. Ice as usual. We used oreos for the roof, graham crackers as the porch and hot cinnamon candies for the brick driveway. The bushes were molded from marzipan & the walkway is chocolate covered peanut clusters. The picture IS dark, but I think you get the idea.
We created this basket of flowers for our garden wedding--yes, those are real flowers you see on the cake. Our trick? Small plastic (lightweight!) plant liners with clear marbles to support the stems & real water to keep them fresh. A simple basket weave icing effect completed the picture. Note our cutting knife is a garden trowel & our champagne glasses are tiny jelly jars! Cute, huh?
