The home pictured to the left may have been one of the first houses to be built
and/or occupied on 17th Street beyond 14th Avenue. The city directory from 1906
lists this home’s address and one other. The copy of the original deed
shows that Lillian Christmas Crews purchased the home for $2,000.00 on November
5th, 1906. Lillian was married to WD Crews, manager of Matthews & Lively,
a furniture store on 3rd Avenue South. It was interesting that her husband was
not on the deed. Women had not even gained the right to vote at this time. The
home had two “alley houses” as they were called in the rear yard.
One of the houses is pictured above to the right. That is most likely where
the porter and maid lived.
