Any Notes or Special Historical Events:

The home pictured to the left may have been one of the first houses to be built and/or occupied on 17th Street beyond 14th Avenue. The city directory from 1906 lists this home’s address and one other. The copy of the original deed shows that Lillian Christmas Crews purchased the home for $2,000.00 on November 5th, 1906. Lillian was married to WD Crews, manager of Matthews & Lively, a furniture store on 3rd Avenue South. It was interesting that her husband was not on the deed. Women had not even gained the right to vote at this time. The home had two “alley houses” as they were called in the rear yard. One of the houses is pictured above to the right. That is most likely where the porter and maid lived.
