A little over a week ago I was looking at my guestbook to see if there had been any new postings that I hadn't been aware of, and to my suprise I noticed that Johnnie Fingers had signed my guestbook. I have been in second heaven since, as Johnnie Fingers was always one of my favorite rockers, as were all of The Rats. Anyway, I was lucky enought to get a message through to Johnnie to thank him for visiting my web page and I asked him if he would agree to answer some questions to be listed on my web page. He agreed and so I have included the interview below. I want to express my sincere appreciation to Johnnie for taking time out his busy schedule to discuss some of his life's history with me.

Steve: The
Boomtown Rats were together for just about 10 years.
What are you feelings today about that period of your life? Johnnie: I look back on those days as the nice way I spent the best part of my youth, with my mates, seeing the world , (and) doing the thing I like the most, Music. Steve: After The Boomtown Rats disbanded, both you and Simon Crowe worked on a music project called "Gung Ho". How did this come about? Whatever happened to the female vocalist "Yoko"? Also, was there any other releases by "Gung Ho" other than the 3 song single? Johnnie: After Live Aid, Bob wanted to do a solo thing and so myself and Simon took the opportunity to put together some ideas.Gung-Ho made one album called '10'.It was released in Japan and parts of Europe but not the UK.The English record company was bought out before the English release and so the new company never released it.I married Yoko. This is how I came to be in Japan. Steve: Have you worked on any other music projects since "Gung Ho"? Johnnie: I am working with a Japanese friend called Toshiaki Shibata. We have a band called "Greengate" We had a CD released on Darla Records (an indie label out of San Francisco) The album title is 'Metaphysical Vibration'.We are at present working on new stuff which will be released in Japan.I think the info on it is www.Darla.com Steve: I understand that you are currently working as a DJ and a music producer in Japan. How did this come about? Johnnie:: I am not a DJ,but music producer and song writer.I was always interested in Japan or the East,so I got the chance a couple of years ago to come here, and have been ever since. The ironic thing is I do a lot of projects in the UK. Steve: Do you still keep in touch with the former members of The Boomtown Rats? Johnnie: I do with Simon,Garry,Gerry.I haven't spoken to Bob for years and I really don't know what he is doing as I never hear from him, except the Paula/Hutchence affair.Pete,I really don't know where he is. Steve: I've heard Bob Geldof talk about what Live Aid felt like to him. Can you tell us what being a performer at Live Aid meant to you? Johnnie: I got a chance to see and chat to a lot of my idols. The performance went very quickly, all a bit of a blur really. Steve: What is a day in the life of Johnnie Fingers like today? Johnnie: I was invited recently to play with a very famous Japanese artist 'Kiyoshiro'.It had been a long time since I played live and I thought I didn't miss it.But in a way it all came back to me,the roar of the crowd ect.I really enjoyed that flashback. As regards my everyday life,I jump from project to project. Steve: As you think back on your life, what achievement are you most proud of, musically or otherwise? Johnnie: Ask me that in a few years time. |
