I first came across "Starhunt" in a 1980 issue of Starburst, a monthly magazine devoted to science-fiction film and tv. Tucked away at the back was an interview with the producers of the forthcoming low budget "Starhunt-The Movie". The first thing that caught my attention were the preproduction sketches by Andy Probert. Although the sketches were very simple and very reminiscent of Star Trek, they were enough to fire my imagination. After this small article, I heard nothing more regarding the movie.
Then in 1990, I stumbled across the novel by "David Gerrold". Already a well established author and well known in Star Trek circles as the writer of episodes such as "The Trouble With Tribbles", the look of those earlier sketches now made perfect sense. However, the novel did'nt read like Star Trek. It had a much grittier, more military feel to it, more akin to submarine movies like "The Enemy Below" or even the more recent "Crimson Tide". I've always thought "Starhunt" would make a great movie. Originally called "Yesterday's Children" it was first published in 1972. At around the time of the movie being developed, several chapters were added to the end of the book and it was republished with the snappier title of "Starhunt" .
I kept coming back to the book, and it's well thought out ship, and began doing a few "concept sketches" of my own. Someday, I'll find the time to properly sit down and design the whole ship.
In 1997, David Gerrold announced that Starhunt would finally be made. This time however, it would be a television series called "The Star Wolf". The series dispenses with the original novel, and instead is based on three more books, "Voyage of the Starwolf", "The Middle of Nowhere" and finally the unpublished as yet "Blood and Fire". For these books, and the TV series, David Gerrold changed some of the characters, and also the layout and history of the ship, the LS-1187. As yet, it seems the TV series has'nt been made. It seems the project is stalled in development hell, which is a great shame.
