. 95 Thackrey Orion. After lunch, some of us went over to David Millman''s new house. I brought this wine over and we opened it up. I didn''t take any notes, but this wine is still a baby, with lots of ripe fruit followed by massive tannins. For those who love the minty/eucalyptus style of the Orions, this wine doesn''t disappoint. Probably still needs 2-4
years in the cellar.

What a star! Deep rich red/black with intense nose of bacon fat and vanilla. Youthful palate with strong tannin, intense spicy new oak and damson and cherry fruit galore. Excellent!

Very deep, striking, cerise colour - straight out of a paint-box. This is Orion. That high, confected, mint-leaf, basil nose is unmistakable. Rather more lush on the palate than the last vintage, with that consistent confected top-note, but much better, more structured fruit beneath. Quite unctuous and chewy, with sour cherry and dusty, berry fruit and tannic backbone. This is better than the '94 and....I actually like it.

1990 Sean Thackrey Orion, 1 point. Had we voted to fifth place, this would''ve been by fifth place wine. Several pegged it as the ringer. Nose of serious lavender, vanilla, rose hips and citrus. Plenty of fruit and structure with a clean and pleasing finish. Easily, for me, the most intriguing nose of the flight, if you dismiss the cat piss wine.

1990 Sean Thackrey Orion
typical over-the-top Orion nose, rosemary, pine nettles and eucalyptis
medium to full body, still some drying tanins after 10 years
lots of fruit left. very impressive long dry finish
still seems quite young

Wine No 1 (My #4, group #6): Strong citrus oil and berry fruit, mint, oak spice; an interesting and complex nose. On palate, very good acid, young tongue-coating tannins and bright lemon. The acid is a little weird, with a Country-Time Lemonade quality. Still, complex and fun. Doesn''t seem like a Syrah. VERY GOOD MINUS. French.

1995 Thackrey "Orion," A California Native Red Wine: (opened the night before, the bottle appears on the table two-thids full) big, dark, inky black in color and opaque; big, dense, full-blown nose of black cherry, blackberry, spice and more; very full in body, plush, mouth-filling -- almost chewy -- with loads of flavor and character, very long in the finish. Very impressive in its style, perhaps best served alone (?).

JBL: "''Native Red Wine''?!?!? WTF is that?!?!?!?!?"

Plotnicki: "Oh wow, look at that color! Now this is a wine!"

Stuart: "''Native Red Wine''?!?!? WTF is that?!?!?!?!?"

George: "This is the only wine that will stand up to the venison."

Plotnicki: "This is more like it!"

George: "Nope. Too powerful."

Plotnicki (much later): "This is great, but what would you serve it with?"

Deep, black, opaque colour. Last time I tasted this I used the adjective "weird" to describe the nose. I'll stick with that: really high scents of mint leaf, confectionery, blackcurrant and pesto sauce. On the palate it's a very luscious wine with plenty of ripe black fruit and very grippy tannin. The finish dries the mouth with plenty of good acidity. It is clearly a well structured, complex and characterful wine, but I'm just not convinced I really like it.
