She was born in Kentucky and lived there until she was 10. It was during summers
at her grandparents’ Lake Cumblerland cabin that she first heard the whippoorwill
chanting its name repeatedly every night. As she chanted the name with this
unseen bird, she felt a strange connection to it, like it was taking over her
mind. Today, she fully believes she is related to this mysterious night bird
that repeats it own name over and over as she is often heard nightly doing the
same.
Her family moved to East Lansing, Michigan when her father scored the trumpet
professorship at MSU. This is where she went to high school and university.
She recently moved to Brantford, and this is where she lives now. She was in
bands throughout high school such as E.L. teen angst legends Vulture Island
and the less angsty Atlantis. She then became the singer in the short-lived
Motorhead-style band The Endtimes. After being annoyed with hauling equipment
around and frequently misplacing patch cords, mic stands, microphones and other
electrical band necessities, she decided to have a go at playing acoustically.
She had written songs throughout high school and university and wanted to play
them for more people than just her dad and/or housemates. She released a self-titled
CD under the name Veloura Caywood for the Lansing-based Isoxys Record label
of four-track recordings made over a period of four years. It is lo-fi, melodic,
sometimes funny and light and sometimes irritating or crazed. You can still
buy this exciting CD from Isoxys
Records or CD
Baby.
Whippoorwillma has traveled alone in her car quite a bit and it is because of
this that she has taught herself how to yodel (with the audio help of Canada’s
yodelling champion, Shirley Field.) Many a day and night on the 401, 402, and
403, and/or on I-69 she could be heard yodelling out of the windows of her speeding
1987 Jeep Cherokee, named JP, far across the country side. After moving to Brantford,
she became friends with Wylde Swanda, Darling Starling and Princess Peacock.
With Canarian, who could easily be her sister-in-law, they started the Flamingo-gos.
This is quite a refreshing and rewarding experience for Whippoorwillma because
she has always loved playing with a band, being loud, singing, and especially
this style of music, whatever you wanna call it. Also, with the charismatic
Frank Brownfield, she has formed the duo known as Song-A-Oke.
They are MC’s and will MC any party or show – sure to delight and
amaze!
